Many mothers seek smaller, non-Prague maternity hospitals because they do not want to give birth in a "baby factory". Are you able to maintain a family atmosphere in the maternity ward even with such a large number of births?
Our maternity hospital, despite the fact that there are around 1,700 births a year, is not considered a "baby factory". Here, the care of the mother is individual. If it is possible for operational reasons, one obstetrician and one midwife take care of the mother during the birth. The parent's trust in the staff is the basis for cooperation during the birth and also after the birth in the sixth-form unit. The helpfulness of the doctors, nurses and other staff members is a matter of course.
How is your maternity registration?
There is no registration for birth in our maternity ward. We recommend one visit to the hospital's gynecology outpatient clinic.
What facilities does the Hořovice maternity hospital provide for parents? How are mothers satisfied with the menu you offer them?
The Hořovice Maternity Hospital offers parents a pleasant environment of delivery rooms, a maximum of double modern equipped rooms of the sixth-grade. The presence of the father at the birth is already a matter of course. For a fee, it is possible to use a single room or a room for mother and father. Our maternity ward is staffed by knowledgeable personnel. The menu for mothers after childbirth is varied and adapted to the needs of nursing mothers.
How do you deal with the demands of the increasing number of mothers for a cesarean birth "on demand"?
C-section on demand is performed in the case of a breech position of the baby, and the request is also granted in the case of repeated caesarean sections and the age of the mother over 40.
There is increasing talk of so-called alternative births that "respect the wishes and individuality of the mother", etc. What is your opinion on these new requirements?
Our obstetricians and midwives quite routinely work with birth plans and wishes. It is not a problem to accommodate a parent in their birth wishes as long as they are not in direct conflict with lege artis procedures. Parents have every right to express their views and dissent.
Can you give some examples of bizarre requests from mothers-to-be that you have encountered?
I can think of two: the ward manager was called to a complication during labour on the fetal side, when it was necessary to perform a caesarean section. The doula (i.e., the birth attendant chosen by the parent) approached the chief to ask if rosemary could be used. The method of administration was no longer discussed. All went well. And the second -short -parent stated in the birth plan, "if I ask for pain medication, under no circumstances give it to me".
What's the rough percentage of births with the father present? From the obstetrician's point of view, is his presence beneficial or does it complicate your work?
The presence of the father at the birth is now quite common. I would estimate that about 80% of mothers have a partner present at birth. In most cases, the partner is a support for the mother. Exceptionally, we are surprised by the inappropriate behaviour of the partner, who makes light of the pain and, for example, does not want to allow the woman to apply pain medication, epidural analgesia. Fortunately, this situation is exceptional and the parent herself has the final say.
