Information for blood donors

Before donating blood and its components, it is necessary to read the Instructions for blood donors

Who can be a blood donor

Any healthy person between the ages of 18-65 can donate blood; people under the age of 60 are accepted as first-time donors. The donor does not have to be a citizen of the Czech Republic, but should have at least long-term residence here and in any case good communication in Czech must be possible. He/she must show a valid ID card (passport in exceptional cases) and a health insurance card in the Czech Republic.

Restrictions on donation

Persons with a history of infectious hepatitis, especially type B or C, syphilis, tuberculosis, certain tropical diseases cannot donate blood.
After other infectious diseases, they are only temporarily excluded from donation (1 to 2 years after recovery) - e.g. infectious hepatitis A, infectious mononucleosis, brucellosis, Lyme disease, gonorrhoea, etc.
For non-infectious diseases of various organs (heart, lungs, digestive tract, kidneys, liver, etc.), donors are usually excluded temporarily or permanently, depending on the severity of the disease. In any case, persons with cancer cannot donate blood.
After surgical procedures, including piercings and tattoos, it is not possible to donate blood until 4 months later.
Also permanently excluded are people with diabetes, severe allergies, people with epilepsy, haemophiliacs and people who have been treated in the past with pituitary (pituitary gland) hormones - e.g. growth hormone.
Also excluded from donation are people from groups with increased risk behaviour, especially with regard to HIV infection, such as people involved in prostitution, drug and alcohol addiction.

In a number of cases - e.g. allergies, medication use, etc. - the doctor decides on eligibility for donation after individual consultation with the donor.

Under current EU rules, women can donate whole blood up to 4 times a year and men 5 times a year.
The shortest interval between donations in our department is 10 weeks. One blood donation is 450 ml.

Certain medical and other circumstances may temporarily prevent you from donating blood. It is therefore necessary to take these into account when choosing a suitable date for your donation.

In some cases, such as

is decided individually and it is therefore advisable to consult a doctor ( tel. 311 559 401)

If you have any further questions, please contact the doctor at 311 559 402 or e-mail: darci@nemocnice-horovice.cz.

How to prepare for the procedure

Minor restrictions related to preparation for the collection are mainly related to diet and start 24 hours before the expected collection. Exercise is not recommended the day before or on the day of the collection, as it may skew some readings. However, starvation can have the same effect !!!

One of the persistent misconceptions is that it is necessary to come to the blood donation fasting, but this sometimes leads to a feeling of weakness after the donation. Those who are used to having breakfast do not have to skip breakfast( we provide tea, coffee and a roll for refreshments). You just need to modify your food composition a little, that is, 24 hours before the scheduled collection, do not eat fatty food, do not drink alcoholic beverages and milk.
