The Hořovice Hospital is dedicated mainly to the curative and preventive care of its patients. An integral part of good care is the continuous education of employees, for example by organizing conferences or seminars. One such conference took place on Thursday 5 November at the Elbe Club and was dedicated to the now much-discussed topic of palliative care and its possibilities in the home environment. Behind the birth of the event were mainly MUDr. Mahulena Mojžíšová, head of the children's ward of the Hořovice hospital, the Hospice of the Good Shepherd TŘI, o. p. s. and representatives of the organisation Cesta domů.

The seminar was introduced by Michal Průša, M.D., MBA, Director of the Hořovice Hospital and at the same time an expert guarantor of the seminar, who has been dealing with pain treatment in his practice for many years. The first part of the seminar included lectures on palliative care as a part of modern medicine by Martin Loučka PhD. and on the possibilities of palliative care in the home environment by Irena Závadová, M.D. In the second part of the programme, the participants could learn about home palliative care for paediatric patients from Mahulena Mojžíšová, MD, head of the children's ward at Hořovice Hospital, and community nursing work in a mobile hospice team from Pavel Klimes, head nurse of the Cesta domů organisation. The whole programme was concluded with a lecture on palliative care for cancer patients by Renata Koževnikova, MD, from the hospice in Čerčany.

"I see the organization of seminars in the field of home palliative care as very important at the present time," said MUDr. Mahulena Mojžíšová after the event. "Despite a certain shift in recent times, this type of care is still much more common abroad than in our country. Palliative care, whatever the setting, is still not perceived as an integral part of modern medicine. Just as there is no concept of this care, its financing by health insurance companies has not yet been resolved. If we add in the continuing taboo on the subject of dying, then we are left with a mere 1% of people who die at home among their loved ones. From my point of view, these are sad facts and I consider it necessary and very useful to do everything possible to change this in the near future. If this seminar could contribute at least a little bit in building a mosaic of well-functioning palliative care, I am very grateful for it," added the head of the hospital in Horovice.

The importance of the topic is reflected in the interest in the seminar, which was filled to capacity immediately after it was announced. "This fact is also important information for us that we will certainly repeat the event in the near future, there are still many topics to discuss. I am very happy for the rich participation, for which I would like to thank everyone. The same goes for the helpful attitude of the hospital management towards organizing similar seminars," added MUDr. Mojžíšová.
