Prevention can save lives or a small list of promotions of Hořovice health workers

This year, the medical staff of the Hořovice Hospital also participated in social and cultural events that are already regularly held in the Beroun region. Among the list of their activities was the opening of a new playground in Hořovice and the traditional Karlštejn Castle Festival.

"We measured the visitors' blood sugar, blood pressure and performed functional lung function tests or spirometry," says Jiří Pichlík, head of the Hořovice health care team. The programme also included a demonstration of resuscitation, including instructions on how to perform it correctly. The participants were also informed about the treatment and prevention options that the Hořovice hospital provides to citizens. On 1 June, Hořovice health workers took part in the opening ceremony of a new playground, which was built on the basis of a fundraiser by Hořovice mothers. Hořovice Hospital was one of their most generous sponsors. MUDr. Marta Martínková was therefore asked to cut the ribbon as a representative of the hospital. The former head of the gynaecology and obstetrics department, who brought many children into the world during her professional life, including those who came to the event with their own offspring, was the most suitable person to open the playground. On behalf of the implementation team of the Playground for Hořovice Groundhogs project, Lucie Menclová, chairwoman of the Hořovice Mothers Association, thanked the hospital for its financial support. "Thanks to this support, it was possible to build a playground of such size and quality", said Mrs. Menclová.

Another event at which the Hořovice health workers were present was the children's day, which is held annually
31 May in the park Dražovka in Hořovice. "During the examinations that we performed on the participants, we managed to detect a total of twelve of them with deviations from physiological functions that would be appropriate for further examination in our pulmonary outpatient clinic," says Jiří Pichlík. "We gave these people an appointment card and referred them to the appropriate outpatient clinic, where they were then taken into the care of a lung specialist at the Hořovice hospital," he adds.

The Hořovice team provided its preventive and diagnostic services, including medical support for the entire village festival in Podbrdy. One of the participants was diagnosed with advanced diabetes and immediately sent to hospital. "As she was a lady innkeeper, the visitors took our intervention with displeasure", reveals Jiří Pichlík, who then adds that this incident is proof that prevention can indeed save lives.

Preventive actions are part of the new programme of the Hořovice Hospital, which promotes the health of the population in the Beroun region. "We are making it clear to the public that our aim is not only to cure people, but also to teach them how to prevent diseases - by early prevention," says Luděk Pelikán, MD, Director of the Hořovice Hospital. He recalls that since last year the hospital has organised a number of educational programmes, presentations and lectures. Among the new projects, he mentions, for example, the preventive programmes of the transfusion department. The largest blood transfusion station in the Central Bohemia Region has started special preventive programmes including consultations with an expert since April this year. They are called FIT FEMALE or FIT MALE and are aimed at donors under 40, while the VITAL FEMALE or VITAL MALE programmes are aimed at donors over 40. These programs include a medical history (pre-natal history) and physical examination including an orientation exam for vision and skin tumors, blood tests, urinalysis, abdominal ultrasound, EKG or lung x-ray. So far, more than 50 donors of the Hořovice Transfusion Station have taken advantage of this offer. Further educational events are planned in cooperation with schools in Hořovice and concern healthy nutrition and obesity prevention.
