Pastuch's eleven

Eleven orthopedists, eight nurses and five orderlies. This is exactly the composition of the Hořovice orthopaedics department, which, under the leadership of Chief Milan Pastucha, is able to successfully compete with orthopaedic teams from much larger hospitals in terms of quality of care, efficiency and range of services.

"After the arrival of our new colleague Jakub Gulac, we have exactly eleven orthopaedic doctors," says Milan Pastucha, MD. The reputation of Hořovice orthopaedics has long since gone beyond the borders of Berounsko and its services are sought by more and more patients from all regions of Bohemia. "Fortunately, Hořovice orthopaedics operates supra-regionally. The Beroun district has about 80,000 people, which would be quite on the edge of the required efficiency. Therefore, the proportion of patients from Beroun in the field of joint replacements and arthroscopies, for example, represents only 25 percent of our patients. The remaining 75 percent are from Prague, Pilsen, Karlovy Vary, Ústí nad Labem, South Bohemia or various districts of Central Bohemia," says Chief Pastucha with a certain amount of pride.

When asked why patients with orthopaedic problems have to wait so long for surgery, Chief Pastucha replies that the insurance companies set the waiting times this way. "The average wait for a joint replacement is one year. This is considered acceptable by the insurance companies. In our hospital, the waiting time for surgery of large joint replacements is 4-5 months on average," says the chief of the hospital in Horovice.

When asked about the recovery process of patients after orthopaedic surgery and how long it takes for a patient to get back on his or her own feet, Chief Pastucha says: "In the hospital in Hořovice we put emphasis on getting the patient out of bed on the first day after surgery. If the patient is young and cooperative, it usually goes well. In the case of elderly people, we aim for them to be able to walk independently on crutches, up and down stairs, on the seventh day after surgery when they are discharged from hospital. Previously, the hospital stay after a joint replacement was three weeks. Now it's seven days in our hospital, maybe only 2-4 days abroad. Here, it is due to the fact that the patient pays for the hospitalisation and is therefore motivated to leave the bed soon and return home," adds Chief Pastucha.

The chief and his colleagues set an example not only in the field of medical care, but also in many other social and educational activities. Hořovice orthopaedic surgeons can be found at all of the hospital's sporting events, whether it is a volleyball tournament, ice skating, a cycling trip or the "Dragon Boat" boating competition. And if in the famous story of Eduard Bass it was a celebration of brotherhood, with sons always sticking together, it is the same in the young, Czech-Slovak team of the Hořovice orthopaedics.
