Palliative care project in our hospital

In May this year, the Avast Foundation launched a grant call within the Together to the End project. With this call, it decided to support palliative care projects in a hospital setting. The Hořovice Hospital submitted its project together with nearly 60 applicants from all over the Czech Republic. A total of 18 projects were supported and among them the Hořovice hospital project, in addition to a 100% contribution.

The project has been running for six months in our hospital. So what has happened so far and what are the plans before it is completed at the beginning of 2018? "Eighty percent of the costs are intended for training of employees in the care of terminally ill patients," said Mahulena Mojžíšová, MD, head of the children's ward at the local hospital, who is also the expert guarantor of the project. "A palliative care team was created across the hospital, consisting mainly of medical and non-medical staff, supplemented by a psychologist and a social worker, whose members began to receive theoretical and practical training in palliative care. The aim is to provide comprehensive care not only to the dying patient but also to his/her family and loved ones. Unfortunately, this is not yet the norm in the hospital environment," added the Hořovice headmistress. During the past six months, the entire team has undergone a special ELNEC training course, internships at the palliative care unit of St. Charles Boromean Hospital, and internships at the Cesta domů and the hospice in Čerčany. Equally important was the participation in a number of educational events, such as the VIII Czechoslovak Palliative Medicine Conference in Brno or the II. Children's Palliative Care Conference in Prague.

"About twenty percent of the project costs will then be used to adapt two existing rooms of the inpatient internal ward and two rooms of the inpatient children's ward of the hospital for the needs of patients at the end of their lives. These rooms are planned as single rooms, with the possible continuous presence of the patient's relatives, and the emphasis will also be placed on maximum comfort and friendliness of the environment," said Bc. Jiří Pichlík, the chief setter of the internal medicine department, who is also the project coordinator.
