Over the last five years, the number of hospital admissions has increased by 40 to 50 people per month, says Markéta Veverková, MD

When you meet her in the corridors of the hospital, she seems rather inconspicuous, and you would probably hardly guess that this young doctor runs the internal medicine department in Horovice, one of the most demanding hospital departments, where hundreds of patients a year seek treatment and comfort. Among her colleagues and patients, chief Markéta Veverková has earned natural respect for her helpfulness, diligence and empathy, always accompanied by a perpetual smile. In the following lines, Chief Medical Officer Veverková talks about the new treatment options offered by the outpatient and inpatient part of the Hořovice Internship.

It's been two years since you took over the primary care of the internal medicine department. How do you perceive the development of your department in that time?

I took over the primary care shortly after the complete reconstruction of the internal medicine department, which took place in 2013. In mid-2015, we increased the capacity of our department by an additional eight beds, five of which are located in the inpatient neurology area. We have also expanded the number of specialist outpatient clinics, not only their number but also their surgery hours. Twice a week we have an internal outpatient clinic open until 7 pm, which is especially appreciated by busy clients.

What services does the inpatient part of the internal medicine department offer to patients? What is the spectrum of diseases in which the Hořovice internal medicine specializes?

Our department provides comprehensive care to patients in the entire spectrum of internal medicine. I would like to mention some of the strengths of our department in patient care, which are made possible by very good technical equipment. Among other things, patients can be monitored 24 hours a day without being bedridden. We have two intermediate care rooms (six beds in total), which are basically facilities equivalent to ICUs in terms of equipment and services provided - fully monitored beds, a ventilator for non-invasive ventilation, etc. Of course, we also offer single superior rooms.

Do you have a full capacity, or what innovations does your department offer?

On average, we hospitalise 190-200 patients per month. The average hospitalisation time is 4.5 days, which corresponds to an occupancy rate of approximately 83-86%. Over the last five years, we have seen an increase of 40 to 50 hospital admissions per month.

How is the collaboration with other departments of the hospital?

Since I work in a regional hospital, and have done so for almost twenty years, personal relationships with colleagues from other departments are much closer than somewhere in a teaching hospital. Hence the usually very good cooperation between individuals and departments.

What does the internal medicine department provide in outpatient care?

Over the last few years we have considerably expanded the range of outpatient care offered, in terms of numbers, specialties and hours, for example by introducing an afternoon service. In addition to several general internal medicine outpatient clinics and traditional outpatient clinics such as cardiology (with a full range of examination methodologies) or gastroenterology (including endoscopy), we have added, for example, a sleep medicine outpatient clinic with full sleep monitoring or immunology and allergy. In our conditions, the internal medicine department also includes the outpatient clinics of general practitioners and occupational physicians.

How are you dealing with the chronic shortage of nurses?

I must boast that our department has not yet had to deal with the problem of a shortage of nurses. We have a very good and stable nursing staff that is continually being replenished by new arrivals. A lot of credit for this goes to our head nurse Mr. Bc. Jiří Pichlík. Together we manage to maintain a sufficiently large team of doctors and non-medical staff.

Does the fact that you live in Hořovice help you in your profession?

I think so. I have an overview of the region, I know the realities of Hořovice and the surrounding villages, I know the socio-economic conditions of the local population and I have got to know many of my patients outside of work.
