Beroun Hospital will celebrate 80 years since its opening in 1929. On Friday 11 September, the newly renovated premises for the internal ward with a modern intensive care unit will be inaugurated in the presence of distinguished guests and employees. On Saturday, September 12, the main programme for the public will be held on the hospital premises and is scheduled for 1 to 8 pm.
In addition to information about the new services and tours of the new hospital premises, it will be possible to see, for example, an exhibition of historic ambulances. A competition for children's drawings to decorate the hospital will also be held at the same time. Another cultural programme will be enriched by live music, which will be played throughout the afternoon. Refreshments will be prepared for all visitors. A modern and beautiful hospital with quality care and a good attitude towards patients. This is the motto formulated by the current owner of the hospital Ing. Sotirios Zavalianis. "As part of the planned celebrations, I want to present that we have not only stuck to a good intention, but that we are also turning it into reality. Every visitor, whom we cordially invite to the celebrations, can see this for themselves." Guests will be able to see the whole area, especially the newly opened and renovated wards, and learn about the history and future of the hospital. They will enjoy listening to various bands in the afternoon. "We also wanted to introduce our culture, so the bands will include Greek music performed by Prometheus or Greek dances by the Akropolis ensemble .I also believe that no one will be able to resist the Greek cuisine, which will enliven the refreshments for our visitors," adds the Greek-born owner.
The history and especially the construction of the hospital was turbulent; the hospital had to be built by the district at that time with its own funds. A plaque still stands by the surgical pavilion of the hospital, which reads, "For the benefit of the suffering, built by the district government in 1927-1929." At the time of its opening, the hospital had 250 beds, one third of which were surgical and the rest internal. M.D. Calta, the present Specialist Representative of the Society, says of the hospital, "Today the internal ward has 44 beds and 6 beds in the intensive care unit. First, we equipped and commissioned new operating theatres, where the arthroscopy centre operates under day care. In cooperation with the orthopaedic clinic of doc. Trč from Motol University Hospital provides top-quality orthopaedic care with 24 beds. The acute inpatient care of our and our partner Hořovice Hospital is followed by the recently opened Early Medical Rehabilitation Unit with 42 beds and 72 beds of the long-term care hospital," Calta concludes the list of the hospital's inpatient facilities and services.
The cost of building the Beroun Hospital in 1929 was more than 20.5 million crowns. At that time, this was a relatively large sum. After its completion, the Beroun Hospital was one of the most modern hospitals in the then Czechoslovakia. "Today's hospital has the same ambitions. The current costs are in the hundreds of millions of crowns, and in addition to the newly opened wards and outpatient clinics, the investment was directed into completely new utilities, devices and equipment. The new facade is just the icing on the cake," says the owner, who is personally involved in the entire reconstruction. "We are doing it with our own forces, yet perfectly and in accordance with all standards. We pride ourselves on being self-sufficient and doing what few people could do within such a budget. I want the hospital to serve everyone well and with quality. Finally, come and see it!" Zavalianis' message to all.
Further details of the planned celebrations can be found in the information issued by the City of Beroun on the European Heritage Days programme, of which the hospital's anniversary celebrations are an accompanying programme, or directly on the Beroun Hospital website at www.nemocnice-beroun.cz.
