New ARO department after reconstruction

When the construction of a brand new extension to the main building of the Hořovice hospital began in the 1990s, many people may have shaken their heads. Today, not only are the departments of radiology and SONO on the ground floor and four central operating theatres on the second floor in operation, but also the much-needed anaesthesiology and resuscitation department, which is located on the first floor of this modern extension. Here, medical staff care for patients after operations and also for severe, life-threatening medical conditions. It is therefore obvious that special health and hygiene procedures must be maintained here, and special equipment is also needed.

Although some reconstruction of this department had already taken place in the past, as the years went by it became increasingly obvious that the existing equipment, although fully functional, was slowing down or complicating some procedures. Therefore, the hospital management decided to temporarily relocate the entire A&E department to one part of the inpatient surgery department and to start reconstruction of the existing ward premises. This happened at the beginning of the holidays and the move was certainly not easy. "Our patients require constant care and supervision, any manipulation can have an impact on their health," said Bc. Rostislav Hájek, head nurse of the ARO department. The transfer therefore had to be carefully planned and was carried out under the joint supervision of a doctor and several nurses, with the monitor, infusion and a number of other necessary components being transported along with the patient on the bed to ensure that they were plugged in immediately.

The instrumentation providing basic life functions for patients in the renovated ARO department is brand new and has been designed to be as convenient as possible for patients and healthcare professionals alike. "Everything was carefully consulted with the supplier and designed to make even complex devices simple and intuitive to operate, to simplify the previously complex task of securing patients during their transfer to and from the operating theatres, and to make the work more efficient and safer at the same time. The proposal was prepared by the head nurse of the department, Rost'a Hájek, and we are glad that this was possible, because the medical staff themselves know best what makes their work more difficult and vice versa," said Jiří Steinbach, MD, head of the anaesthesiology department in Horovice.

The move back to the ward from the temporary premises of the surgery took place on Sunday 11 September. "I would like to thank everyone who helped with the moving and transfer of patients, even though it took until late at night. I would also like to thank the hospital management for supporting and making the refurbishment possible and the Surgery Department for the temporary loan of its premises. Some details, especially technical ones, are still being gradually worked out during the operation, but the provision of patients and the operation of the ward has been ensured 100%," said head nurse Hájek.
