What outpatient services does paediatrics in Hořovice offer?
In addition to the general paediatric outpatient clinic providing initial treatment of paediatric patients with acute problems, Hořovice paediatrics offers a very wide range of specialist outpatient services. The outpatient clinics of paediatric pneumology and allergology are well established, which have been strengthened in the last year by two experts, pneumologist Tereza Jeník, MD, and immunologist Jana Kayserová, MD, originally from the Motol University Hospital.
The cardiology outpatient clinic, which offers comprehensive heart examinations including echocardiographic examinations, has also been operating for a long time. There is also a children's surgical outpatient clinic linked to the ongoing planned surgery programme, which is also provided by experts from Motol University Hospital.
And any news in the outpatient section?
We have newly opened a paediatric nephrology outpatient clinic, where we take care of children with kidney and urinary tract diseases. During the examination, we have the opportunity to immediately perform an orientation ultrasound examination, which significantly contributes to speeding up the diagnosis. In cooperation with Motol University Hospital, we can also arrange other specialized examinations such as MCUG ((urinary tract x-ray) or scintigraphy and their subsequent interpretation. We also perform examinations of children with hypertension, including 24-hour home blood pressure monitoring (ABPM).
We hope to extend good cooperation with the urology and paediatric gynaecology outpatient clinics in Horovice to deal with patients with complex nephro-urological problems.
I would also like to highlight the very convenient reception system at 311 555 000, which makes it possible to make appointments for the outpatient clinics on the exact date and time.
How does the pediatric emergency room work, what cases do you encounter?
The Children's Emergency Room operates outside of the Children's Outpatient Clinic hours, i.e. between 3:30pm and 7:00pm on weekdays and around the clock on Saturdays and Sundays. We treat any problems that may be troubling paediatric patients outside of injuries requiring surgical treatment and/or specialist investigations (e.g. ENT or eye). The most common conditions we see are fevers, dehydration, shortness of breath, upper and lower respiratory tract infections, urinary infections, bowel complaints and abdominal pain or rashes.
What facilities does the inpatient ward provide?
The inpatient part of the ward offers care for children aged 0 to 18 years. We have 3 monitored IMP beds for more serious conditions and then very well-equipped and adapted rooms for paediatric patients with separate sanitary facilities. The department also deals with the care of children with long-term serious illnesses and life-limiting conditions.
How long is the average hospital stay for paediatric patients in NH? Are parents allowed to stay in the room with their children?
On average, children are hospitalized for three days. Of course, it is common for a parent and child to be hospitalized in the same room if the operating conditions and epidemiological situation allow. Parents accompanying their child under the age of 6 years have the possibility to be with their child continuously without charge, for older children the parents' stay is charged. We understand that hospitalization is very burdensome for children and their parents and therefore we try to hospitalize children only when it is really unavoidable. We recognize the current trend in pediatrics, which is to solve as many problems as possible on an outpatient basis.
Your specialty, pediatric nephrology, is quite narrow. Do you find enough patients in the Hořovice area?
Paediatric nephrology deals with children's kidneys and their diseases, and it is not a specialty that can only be used in a teaching hospital or dialysis centre. I can't complain about the lack of patients, as the field is very wide and varied. We offer diagnosis and treatment for children with recurrent urinary tract infections or suspected other renal disorders such as haematuria, proteinuria or renal cysts. We provide long-term follow-up of children with urinary tract disorders, including ultrasound examinations and children with autoimmune kidney inflammation. A very large proportion are children with bedwetting, where we offer consultations on other options to address this persistent problem in addition to pharmacological treatment.
