Maternity hospital increases comfort of mothers

Since August this year, the Hořovice Maternity Hospital has had a telemetric cardiotocograph, a device that allows remote monitoring of the fetus. In practice, this means that mothers can move freely during the examination.

"The special feature of the new telemetric cardiotocograph is that it allows the fetal heart action to be monitored remotely. The examination takes place in such a way that the mother has the probes on her abdomen, but she can move freely with them, which certainly represents much more comfort for her during the first period of labour," says Tereza Hubová, MUDr."With a conventional cardiotocograph, a supine position is required. Cardiotocography shows the activity of the uterus and the fetal heart rate. It is performed when the mother arrives in the delivery room and then subsequently during labour. It is painless, requires no prior preparation and has no side effects on either the mother or the fetus," adds the doctor from Horovice.

Cardiotocography is otherwise a common examination method. It allows obstetricians to monitor contractions and measure fetal sounds in a pregnant woman using electrodes attached to her abdomen. This examination is repeatedly performed on pregnant women from the 36th week of pregnancy. Parenting women commonly encounter this examination not only during labour but also during antenatal examinations. The machine processes the information and records it in the form of a curve on paper or on a screen. The obtained curve has a characteristic appearance, from which an experienced doctor can easily tell what the baby's basic vital signs are.
