Hospital in Hořovice accommodates patients with hearing impairment

25. 3. 2015

On the first day of spring, through the organization Tichý svět, the Hořovice Hospital joined the project Barrier-free hospitals for the deaf, which aims to improve communication for the deaf in health care facilities. Thanks to this project, Hořovice Hospital has taken another significant step towards barrier-free accessibility and can now boast a blue and white sticker with the designation "Barrier-free hospital for the deaf".

The project was created thanks to the Advent Concerts of Czech Television in 2012. The money collected from the donations was used to purchase tablets, which are gradually going to selected hospitals. There, they enable medical staff to communicate with a deaf patient thanks to a sign language interpreter, with whom they can communicate via the tablet.
The project leads to the removal of communication barriers between patients and medical staff, for whom this service also means help in their demanding work.
Thanks to this project, Hořovice Hospital has taken another significant step towards barrier-free accessibility and can now boast a blue and white sticker with the designation "Barrier-free hospital for the deaf". This sticker, placed at the entrances to all departments of the hospital, indicates the location of the Central Reception where the tablet is stored. Along with the tablet, a simple manual on how to use it is also stored there. On the imaginary other side there is a 24-hour sign language interpreting service, i.e. an interpreter who, thanks to a webcam, can communicate with a deaf patient and translate everything to a medical professional without any problems.
The online interpreting service has been in operation since 2012 and provides services for hundreds of deaf patients.
