Hořovice Hospital commemorated International Nurses' Day

13. 5. 2015

Hořovice Hospital traditionally joined the International Nurses' Day, which has been celebrated worldwide since 1965 on 12 May. The nurses and midwives of Hořovice Hospital received a flower and a thank you for the demanding work they do from Blanka Červenková, the head nurse of Hořovice Hospital.

"In total, more than 300 nurses and midwives work at the hospital in Hořovice, and this day is practically a form of recognition for their difficult but important work, which is unfortunately often not appreciated by patients and the public," said the head nurse. Ms Červenková presented flowers and thanked nurses in all wards and outpatient clinics. These are nurses who started working a few months ago, but also nurses who have been working in Hořovice for decades, such as Anna Zpěváková, who has been working at the hospital for almost half a century.
International Nurses' Day was created in honour of Florence Nightingale (12 May 1820), who, despite initial resistance from her family, began to devote herself to the sick and wounded and was the first to create the foundations of the nursing model still used today during the Crimean War (1853-56). She was responsible for the first education of nurses, with the main emphasis on hygiene, but also kindness and empathy towards the sick. The time when Florence Nigtingal was a kind of merciful angel is long gone. But even today, modern women nurses sometimes hear and appreciate the term.
