Festive introduction of the new intensive care unit for children

4. 12. 2018

On Monday, 3 December 2018, the new Department of Long-term Intensive and Nursing Care (DIOP) for children at Hořovice Hospital was officially introduced.

The programme was presented by the head of the children's ward , MUDr. Mahulena Mojžíšová. "The ward is designed for children from birth to 19 years of age with serious illnesses that limit their life expectancy. It was opened in the hospital in September this year and has a capacity of 6 fully equipped beds in 6 separate rooms, which allows for the stay of a caring person," describes the head of the department. "The ward is part of the comprehensive palliative care we provide to sick children and their families at the hospital. There are still diseases that we cannot cure, but we can alleviate their symptoms. We can't stop the progression of the disease, but we have something to offer at every moment. We can help to significantly improve quality of life and enable dying with dignity in the company of family. We can help all carers to cope better with the enormous loss that the passing of a loved one undoubtedly is. It does not matter if it is an adult or a child patient," Mojžíšová pointed out.

A whole team within the department takes care of paediatric patients, which includes not only a doctor, a nurse and an orderly, but also a physiotherapist, a psychologist, a social worker and an occupational therapist. There is also the spiritual support of a chaplain. The services of the ward can also be used by a family caring at home for a child with a serious illness whose condition temporarily deteriorates. "They can contact us at any time. During such hospitalization, we then address the current health problems, and once the condition is stabilized, the family can take their child back into home care," Mojžíšová said.

After the presentation of the department at the Hořovice Hospital, a professional programme followed, in which MUDr. Lucie Hrdličková from the Department of Paediatric Haematology and Oncology at Motol Hospital presented the work of the only support and palliative team for paediatric patients in the country at Motol Hospital. This was followed by a presentation by prim. Mahulena Mojžíšová, M.D., who is also the chair of the Section of Children's Palliative Care of the ČSPM ČLS JEP. This presentation highlighted the need for complexity and good coordination of care for a child with an adverse diagnosis at all levels of health and social care. In the last session Pavel Klimeš, head nurse of the mobile hospice Cesta domů, spoke. He focused mainly on the issue of home palliative care for such sick children and their families.
