Expanding a unique ward for chronically ill children

28. 4. 2017

The Children's OCHRIP project was implemented in the spring of 2014 and since then it has successfully served as a medical facility for chronically ill children for three years. The Hořovice department is the first of its kind in the country and until now it was joined only by the Olomouc University Hospital, where one OCHRIP for children was also established.

Over a period of three years, OCHRIP in Hořovice has implemented the necessary medical procedures and established stable nursing methodologies needed to harmonize therapeutic and palliative care. "Due to the unprecedented interest in the services of our department, we have decided to expand the current capacity of the OCHRIP for children from the current 6 beds to about 13 beds, where we will be able to provide resuscitation and intensive chronic care for critically ill pediatric patients with failure of basic life functions," explains MUDr. (On the cover photo Mr. Bla žek with his deputy MUDr. Jana Djakow and Mgr. Pavlina Hesounová, head nurse of OCHRIP.)

At the same time, the management of Hořovice Hospital decided to expand the therapeutic, diagnostic and monitoring possibilities in the treatment of chronic paediatric patients through the modernisation of the existing equipment park. Furthermore, new methodologies such as non-invasive ventilation, diagnosis of bronchial passages by direct bronchoscopy at the bedside and basic ultrasound diagnosis of patients will be introduced, all without the need for their often complicated transport to individual wards. "All of this will allow us to maintain a high standard of medical and nursing care for our patients in our new expanded Children's OPD. The highly positive feedback from the parents of our patients already proves this," says the Hořovice Chief Medical Officer.
