Skin and UV rays

Although being tanned is still "in", the adverse effects of UV rays on the skin have long been known. Therefore, we should never forget to take adequate protection from the sun in summer. We can choose from a wide range of sunscreens and lotions.

UV radiation is divided into short-wave UVC radiation, medium-wave UVB radiation and long-wave UVA radiation.

Redness

Skin redness or erythema is an acute skin inflammation. It is associated with swelling, pain and increased temperature. Early erythema is mainly caused by UVA and UVB radiation.

Pigmentation

Early pigmentation is caused mainly by UVA radiation. It starts to appear during the exposure and reaches its maximum a few seconds after exposure. Late pigmentation is mainly caused by UVB radiation. It appears 3 days after exposure, is more permanent and persists for days or weeks.

Formation of vitamin D

The role of sunlight on vitamin D sufficiency is often overestimated. It is usually sufficient to expose the face, hands and arms to the sun for 15 minutes between 9am and 4pm. It plays a greater role in countries with a deficiency of vitamin D in the diet.

Strengthening the skin

UVB radiation causes the skin to thicken by the growth of cells in the epidermis. This thickening is a kind of natural protective property of the skin.
