On Thursday, 20 June 2013, the traditional event of Czech pharmacists - Pharmacy Day - took place. This year's fifteenth edition, entitled Holidays and sun protection, was mainly devoted to the risks associated with sunbathing and sun exposure. Like every year, the event was also attended by the Hořovice Hospital Pharmacy.
"I think that this year's theme could not have been chosen more appropriately, given the weather," says Mgr. Magdaléna Čížková, Master of Pharmacy of Hořovice Hospital. Although being tanned is still considered a sign of beauty, the adverse effects of ultraviolet radiation on the skin have long been known. "That is why we should not forget about appropriate and effective protection from sunlight, not only during summer holidays," he adds.
There are many different manufacturers and brands of sunscreens on the market. They differ, for example, in their sun protection factor (SPF). Tomas Veverka.
The active ingredients of sunscreens can be divided into two basic categories: chemical and physical sunscreens. Chemical ones absorb radiation and convert it into heat or change its chemical structure. This is associated with a gradual decrease in the effectiveness of sunscreens. Therefore, we must not forget to renew the sunscreen layer approximately every two hours. Physical sunscreens, on the other hand, reflect radiation and have a minimal effect on the photoxic potential of the product. They are therefore recommended for children and people with sensitive or eczematous skin. "For technological reasons, they cannot be used in concentrations higher than 25%, at which they reach a maximum SPF of up to 20. In the most modern preparations with micronized components, it is up to 30 SPF", explains the pharmacist.
Experts from the Hořovice Hospital Pharmacy also stress to their patients the risks associated with the application of topical medications. For example, ketoprofen, which is used topically for pain and inflammation, as well as creams and gels with retinoids and benzoyl peroxide for the treatment of acne. "Even preparations for internal use that contain St John's wort can cause a photosensitive reaction. As for antibiotics and chemotherapeutic agents, we also warn about the inappropriateness of UV radiation in winter for doxycycline, cotrimoxazole or ofloxacin," says Mgr. Magdaléna Čížková.
Mothers mostly buy La Roche Possay, Ladival and Daylong products, which come in the form of a classic body lotion, spray or gel. For exposed areas on the face, a stick with a protective factor can be used. But the main thing is not to forget to put on sunscreen thirty minutes before sunbathing. And don't skimp, spread about seven teaspoons of sunscreen all over your body.
"This event has shown that we are able to dedicate ourselves and give expert advice to all our clients. I am also pleased with the fact that patients commented very positively on the Pharmacy Day," summarizes Mgr. Magdaléna Čížková.
