16. 4. 2020

Ondřej Beneš is the head of the central reception at the Hořovice Hospital. He is one of those who are helping on the front line in the fight against the coronavirus pandemic. In an interview with Berounský deník, Ondřej Beneš said that the current period is particularly difficult for him psychologically.

HEROES FROM THE FRONT LINE

How challenging is the current period for you physically and also mentally? How is it different from the completely "normal" one?

This period is especially challenging for me psychologically, I have never encountered a pandemic of this magnitude, nor have any of my colleagues, and the information from the world has not been very encouraging. I didn't know how it was going to go in our country or what we were going to face in real life. So, of course, one thinks a lot, imagines different scenarios, but it is true that as time goes by and also given the way the situation is developing here so far, I am calmer and calmer. The main difference from "normal" work is the use of a wider range of protective equipment, that was fun of course, it's not such a big deal. The main difference I see is that we have another disease that is much talked about now, many other diseases have its symptoms and more care must be taken in diagnosis so that we do not succumb to hysteria and forget about other diseases.

What about your family, relatives, how do they accept that you are a so-called "frontline" worker?

I think my family and relatives expected me to be on the front line because of what I do. They support me as much as possible, although I'm sure they're worried about who shouldn't be.

How do the people around you react to this? Do they offer to help, do people ask if they can help in any way?

The surroundings support all of us who are on the front line, both paramedics, firefighters and police, as much as they can - they sew drapes, offer accommodation in pensions, hotels. I think this works very well for us and I thank them all very much for that.
When you get home, how do you relax and do you still feel like following the developments around the new coronavirus?
I confess that I try not to follow the developments around the coronavirus anymore, although there is so much going on everywhere that one cannot avoid it. I relax by switching off and not thinking about anything.

What are your hobbies? How do you normally spend your free time and how do you spend your other time because of your job and the quarantine order?

I like to ride my motorbike, which I can't do much now, and I also like to cook. I can do that now that I'm quarantined. I spend my free time mainly with our daughter, who keeps us all busy in the family, most of all my partner of course, there is not much time for anything else. Overall, I didn't have much free time even before the quarantine, nothing much has changed for me.

The coronavirus crisis has shown new Czech heroes - health workers, pharmacists, bus drivers, shop assistants, postwomen and other professions. They all deserve admiration and thanks. Deník presents them in a series. Read more stories of the heroes HERE.
