10 years since the privatisation of the Hořovice hospital - "The development of the entire hospital in Hořovice and Beroun has far exceeded my expectations", says MUDr. Aleš Klán

This June will mark ten years since the privatisation of the Hořovice hospital, which was accompanied by many question marks and concerns from the public, employees and the then councillors of Hořovice about the future of this facility. In the following short interview, Aleš Klán, M.D., long-time head of the Gynaecology and Obstetrics Department, evaluates the privatisation process so far and describes the first meeting with the new owner of the hospital, Ing. Sotirios Zavalianis.

With what feelings did you receive the news of the planned privatisation of the hospital ten years ago?

We knew about the planned privatisation. We could not decide whether it would be or not. At that time, many things were being privatized. I personally didn't have many concerns. The gynaecology and obstetrics department was developing and I could not imagine that anyone could harm us. I just didn't know whether it would be better to have the state or a private owner.

I was more worried about the fate of the private owner, because the health care sector had always been loss-making and the generous hand of the state had not let anyone go bankrupt when it came to caring for the sick.

How was your first meeting with the new owner? How did he impress you?

The first meeting took place in our ward, where the owner was banned from the ward as an unknown person by the second in command, saying that it was a women's ward and foreign men had no business being here. I don't remember what he said.

I myself could tell from the first sentences that the owner was trying to develop the hospital and that it would not be easy for him or for us. I had no fears of the hospital being bankrupted and operating only for the obligatory five years. I got to know the owner as a normal person whose desire is to build a great facility with high quality.

How would you assess the decade after privatisation? What went well, what didn't, what could have been done better?

The development of the entire hospital in Hořovice and Beroun has far exceeded my expectations. Both hospitals have changed beyond recognition. The environment is at the level I always imagined.

I myself am glad that I have lived to see the new wards where the environment is dignified for staff and patients.

The management never interferes with treatment procedures. Patients get the treatment they need. No expense is spared for the patients.

I must also appreciate the zero tolerance for patient complaints about staff.

In light of the development and the amount of investment, it is hard to find negatives. I always regret when a member of staff leaves whom I see as honest workers who, like me, have always been concerned about the benefit of the Institute.
