What led you to choose nursing as a career?
At the age of eleven I was hospitalized in the surgical ward in Rakovník. Since then, I have gradually strengthened my desire to become a nurse. After graduating from the Secondary School of Nursing in Kladno, I joined the Hospital with Polyclinic in Hořovice. I briefly passed through the surgical department and then I went to the internal medicine department.
For some people it seems incredible that you have kept the same job for half a century. What was your motivation?
Throughout my active career, I worked in good teams and was filled with the feeling of care well done every time the person we helped said goodbye.
Where did you get the energy and drive for your profession?
My energy and drive came from my whole family by providing supervision for the children during the round-the-clock services.
How do you feel about the development of the hospital over the last fifty years?
The hospital has always been able to keep up with technical developments. I consider the electronic communication, all the diagnostic equipment, treatment devices and the level of medical care to be significant advances. At present, the gradual modernization of the interior and exterior spaces and the addition of more pavilions qualitatively increase the hospital's ability to provide care to patients.
What has changed in the nursing profession over the years and what has remained the same? Do you have a message for younger colleagues?
With the advent of new technology, there has been an increase in the demand for mastery of the service and with that has come an increase in administrative duties. I think the administrative burden on nurses, which ultimately takes away time for direct patient bedside care, has reached a peak. The division of work between the nurse and the auxiliary nurse is a certain relief. I would urge younger colleagues to consider responsibly whether they really want to pursue this demanding profession.
