It is an undeniable success that we managed to vaccinate more than 1 000 people last week. We hope to continue to do so. This week, we will continue to vaccinate a group of seniors over 70 and a group of teaching staff with the first dose of the vaccine.
The worse news is the steadily increasing number of patients with COVID-19, especially those with a more severe course. A large proportion of these patients need a respirator and some are in artificial sleep. The hospital has repeatedly responded to the worsening situation by converting some of its beds intended for other specialties (especially internal medicine and surgery) to infectious covid beds. In recent days, unfortunately, for capacity and staffing reasons, it is no longer possible to increase these beds very much and their reserve capacity is being reduced.
If this situation continues, the hospital would not be able to continue to fulfil its function in all its details and thus meet the full care in all specialties. That is why we, as well as some of the Central Bohemian hospitals, have decided to declare a so-called state of mass disability of persons. This condition does not mean that we would refuse any patient, but the level and intensity of care provided could fall short of the normal standard in the provision of health care in the Czech Republic if we ran into an absolute shortage of staff or bed resources.
I hope that this situation will not arise. The next few days will be critical, when the load on the hospital will probably increase, but I firmly believe that the situation will begin to calm down after that.
The hospital management will constantly monitor the situation and the state of the mass casualty.
