We invite blood donors for blood donations

Viruses and respiratory illnesses, including pneumonia, which are more prevalent this year, are not avoiding blood donors. "In the last few weeks, therefore, fewer of them have been coming for donations than was usual in November," says Pavlína Nováková, head nurse of the Hořovice Hospital's transfusion department.

In addition, donors cannot donate blood immediately after recovery from an upper respiratory illness with symptoms such as a runny nose, cough, sore throat and fever, but must wait at least 2 weeks. They must wait the same amount of time after receiving antibiotics. "We will therefore be happy if all our healthy donors make an appointment to donate. Both regular ones and those who come occasionally," says the head nurse of the Horovice blood transfusion station.

The Hořovice Hospital Transfusion Station has long been the largest donation point in the Central Bohemia Region. Last year, a record 12,243 free donations were made here. Regional professional and sports associations such as police officers, firefighters, hockey players and others played a key role in this. Employees of large companies from the surrounding area and students of secondary schools in Beroun and Hořovice also donate regularly. This week we welcomed future nurses from the Beroun Secondary Medical School to the blood transfusion station again. "We are here for the tenth time. It is our school tradition. We come twice a year," said the teacher Mgr. Hana Macháčková.

This time 27 students and 5 school employees came with her. More than a third of them donated blood for the first time. "It's my third time. I'm glad that I'm helping someone else," said Jakub Šaroch, who is studying for the fourth year in the medical lyceum and will graduate in the spring. "I'll definitely make it to the collection before then," Jakub Šaroch said goodbye.

Blood consumption has been steadily increasing in recent years due to increasingly complex operations. However, the number of voluntary donors has been declining in the Czech Republic for a long time. "Human blood is one of the few things we cannot produce. Therefore, we are happy to welcome all those who are still considering donating," Pavlína Nováková invites.

Any healthy person between the ages of 18 and 65 can donate blood. Only a healthy individual under the age of 60 can be a first-time donor. Donors are entitled to a day off work and reimbursement of travel expenses after a non-contributory donation. In addition, they can deduct CZK 3 000 from the tax base (up to 10% of the tax base) for each free blood donation in their annual tax return. In addition to the benefits from the state, they can also benefit from contributions from health insurance companies.

Those interested in donating blood can make an appointment at the blood transfusion station of the Hořovice Hospital on weekdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. by calling 311 559 402 and 311 559 555. Blood donations take place every working day.
