Today we celebrate World Physiotherapy Day

8. 9. 2021

This day has been commemorated around the world since 1951. It is the day when the World Confederation of Physiotherapists was founded.

Physiotherapy and physiotherapists have an indispensable role in helping people with loss or decline in functional ability, loss of self-sufficiency and independence caused by various diseases or injuries. Along with these health problems are the limitations of their participation in the social, societal and economic activities of life.

Each of us should realise that by taking an active approach to sport or exercise in general, we can significantly improve our health. That is why, not only on this festive day, we are trying to raise awareness of the importance of physiotherapy and its crucial role in maintaining the mobility of the entire population. Lack of exercise can mean an increased possibility of cardiovascular, pulmonary, and also oncological diseases. Conversely, sufficient movement helps to reduce injuries, prevent musculoskeletal pain and also contributes to the prevention of work-related injuries.

"Our profession is as demanding as any profession. We work with people, and that brings a lot of joy, but sometimes the possibility of misunderstanding. It is important for us to find a common language with the patient and ultimately to see that we have managed to find a way to improve or at least maintain the patient's health to his and our satisfaction," described Lucie Lefnerová, Head of Physiotherapy at the Rehabilitation Hospital Beroun. "Fortunately, in our hospital we have enough devices and aids to facilitate and support our work. Also, our physiotherapists, who continue their training in various techniques and physiotherapy procedures, often discuss potentially complex diagnoses with each other and look for the most effective way forward," the physiotherapist says, adding: "We have a great young team here and we are always looking for new colleagues to join."

We wish that today's day is celebrated not only by the physiotherapists, but also by you. Perhaps by going for a run or a longer walk today.
