The hospital joined the World Health Organization's "Clean Hands" campaign

The International Hand Hygiene Day, which is annually declared by the World Health Organization - WHO at the beginning of May, is an event in which the Hořovice Hospital is traditionally involved. On Monday, 7 May 2018, students of the Secondary School of Health in Beroun conducted an instruction on the correct procedure of hygienic hand disinfection. This year's WHO campaign is dedicated to the fight against sepsis. It seeks to encourage health workers to practice adequate hand hygiene in hospitals and thus reduce the risk of transmitting infections.

The "clean hands" event took place in the entrance area of the hospital in Hořovice. Interested health professionals and visitors tried the correct technique themselves. With the help of ultraviolet light from a special lamp, everyone could check whether they had used the disinfectant solution correctly, in sufficient quantity and on the whole hand. As a reward, the visitors received a small treat in the form of plasters and disinfectant wipes.

"In general, most infections are transmitted on the hands, even in health care settings where everyone should know how to follow proper procedures. It is important to know the situations in which to use disinfectant. Equally important is the correct procedure for applying sufficient disinfectant to all areas of the hands. We must not forget the fingertips and thumbs. This time, too, the campaign has shown that these are the places we most often miss when disinfecting our hands," says Mgr. Blanka Hošková, Quality Manager and Infection Control and Prevention Nurse at Hořovice Hospital.

"Dispensers with disinfectant are freely available for visitors to the hospital on the ground floor and on other floors of the main building. Washing and disinfecting hands is one of the easiest ways to prevent the emergence and spread of infections. Although many of us think that handwashing is not rocket science, annual testing proves that few people get such a common task as handwashing right. Safe care is our priority," says Blanka Hošková.
