"The existing number of halls was no longer sufficient for the current operation. Around 30 surgical procedures are performed daily. Last year, therefore, a new operating theatre was built, which will be used mainly for gynaecological and urological surgery," says Andrej Kovalenko, MD, head of the operating theatres.
The fifth operating room smells of newness and is equipped, like the "older" ones, with the latest technology. "All operating theatres are well equipped. All the equipment is continuously being modernised according to the needs of each specialty," explains the doctor from Horovice. The most common surgical procedures in Hořovice are related to the fields of surgery, orthopaedics, gynaecology, urology, traumatology, ENT, vascular surgery and paediatric surgery.
All the plans for the design of the new theatre were created in collaboration between architects, surgeons, anaesthesiologists and nurses to make the space not only functional, comfortable and safe, but also aesthetic. The nurses serving in the ORs approach every procedure with the utmost care. "Every operation is challenging, including the seemingly trivial ones, because it always requires 100% performance from the entire operating room team. Every operation carries the risk of complications. Our aim is always to minimize these risks," says MUDr. Kovalenko.
Working in operating rooms places high demands on the entire team - the surgeons, the ARO team, the instrument nurses and the OR orderlies. Around twenty operating room and anaesthesia nurses serve in the operating rooms in Horovice. "Work in theatres is particularly demanding in terms of professional and technical knowledge. We are a multidisciplinary workplace where a wide range of devices and technical equipment is used. It is a team effort where high demands are placed on communication skills, concentration, precision, reliability, as well as physical fitness. We would like to thank our team for everything," says Mgr. Martina Popílková, head nurse of the operating theatres.
The construction of the new operating theatre represents another step towards the modernisation and expansion of the hospital in Hořovice. At the beginning of next month, the new tract of outpatient clinics at the entrance of the hospital will be completed, while behind the new pavilion of paediatric intensive care - ICU, the construction of a new building continues, which will serve as the archive of both the Hořovice and Beroun hospitals.
