Thanks to the new device, we are able to diagnose prostate cancer more accurately

At the Hořovice Hospital, we continuously renew instrumentation at all workplaces.

"Prostate cancer is the second most common cancer in men (after skin cancer). We have now purchased a device for the urology department that will allow us to better diagnose this disease. This is the bKSpecto ultrasonograph and a device for performing the so-called fusion biopsy of the prostate," said Tomáš Petsinis, the operational and technical deputy of Hořovice Hospital.

"In order to diagnose prostate cancer, we first have to perform a biopsy, or taking a tissue sample for histological examination. However, sometimes the lesions are so small that it is very difficult to remove the tissue. That is why some patients first undergo a prostate MRI, which allows us to accurately detect even these small deposits in the prostate. The MRI image is then transferred to a special machine that combines the MRI and ultrasound images. Subsequently, samples are taken from these suspicious deposits," described MUDr. Tomas Vavrik, a doctor at the urology department, adding: "In the Czech Republic, fusion biopsy examination is still not widely available. In this respect, we are the first in the Czech Republic to have the possibility of connecting the fusion system with the bKSpecto sonograph. We can now perform targeted biopsies, thanks to which we are able to better detect tumours and at the same time provide better patient care, as it is now not necessary to repeat the biopsy due to insufficient tissue collection, which sometimes used to happen."
