Holidays in the hospital

6. 1. 2016

Christmas spent with family and friends, preferably in the warmth of home, maybe with a fairy tale. That's the idea most of us have. Unfortunately, this is not the case for some professions, including health professionals, who spent this year's holidays at the bedside with patients or in ambulances, helping newcomers with their health problems. And how did this day look like in the hospital in Hořovice, specifically in the children's outpatient clinic and in the central intake clinic?

"Christmas is always very demanding for our medical staff," says MUDr. Mahulena Mojžíšová, head of the children's ward at Hořovice Hospital. "On 25 December alone, we had more than 50 paediatric patients come to our outpatient department, but on other days the number of children treated was higher than usual. This year it was also because the holidays were before the weekend, so there was a relatively long period of free time when parents with children could not seek treatment from their registering paediatrician. Some of them also took a well-deserved day off and parents with children then logically headed to the catchment hospital, which is ours for the Beroun and Hořovice region. The spectrum of difficulties with which children came to our outpatient clinic was very diverse, including traditional tonsillitis, respiratory diseases, digestive problems, but also acute appendicitis requiring surgery. Only the injuries were somewhat less due to the absence of winter."

A large influx of arrivals was also recorded in the outpatient clinics of the hospital's central reception, according to Mgr. "We are aware of the fact that patients sometimes had to wait for a longer time for treatment, yet almost all of them were kind and understanding," says the Hořovice nurse.

A separate chapter is then the maternity hospital U Sluneční brány, which in 2015 broke its birth record from the previous year by giving birth to 1,580 babies, 40 more than in 2014. In the first four days of the new year alone, 19 babies were born.

In general, we can express our gratitude to all the medical staff, whether they are working around the clock in the outpatient or inpatient departments, operating theatres, follow-up ARO or complement, for their work, which many of us perceive somehow automatically.
