Joint Symposium of Gastroenterologists and Surgeons

2. 4. 2015

The first IBD symposium was held at the Hořovice hospital.

At the end of March, the Hořovice Hospital organised a joint symposium of gastroenterologists and surgeons specialising in the treatment of non-specific intestinal inflammation (IBD). The event was held under the title IBD Working Days Hořovice 2015 and was attended by 150 specialists. For the Hořovice Hospital, it was the first event of a similar nature in its history.

There is an increasing number of people whose life is complicated by Crohn's disease or other inflammatory bowel disease. It is a serious and, for the time being, incurable disease, which has been affecting 10 times more patients in the last decade than in the past. "Treating IBD patients is long-term, complicated and extremely costly. In addition, it requires close cooperation between experts in the field of gastroenterology and surgery," explains the main reason for organizing the congress Zuzana Šerclová, M.D., Head of the Centre for Surgical Treatment of IBD at Hořovice Hospital.

The two-day event started on Thursday morning, 26 March, at the Hořovice Hospital, where the first pre-registered participants of the workshop arrived. They took turns in two operating theatres and had the opportunity to participate directly in the operations of Crohn's disease patients. Meanwhile, the theoretical part of the workshop took place in the meeting room of the hospital. This introductory part was followed by lunch and a transfer of the participants to Zbiroh Castle. Here, more than 140 more symposium participants registered and divided into medical and nursing sections so that the first and second educational sessions of the conference could begin. Professionally, both blocks were dedicated to preoperative preparation and collaborative care around surgery. After the second block, the participants had the opportunity to visit the Hořovice Hospital. It was opened with a common toast by the owner of the hospital Ing. Sotirios Zavalianis. This was followed by a tour of the hospital premises.

The second day of the symposium was marked by joint work not only in the further educational block of nurses and doctors, but also in the joint brainstorming session, when the panel members and the participants from the audience jointly discussed the proposal of the study, which will be developed with the collaboration of 7 specialized surgical and gastroenterological departments across the country. The individual activities will be coordinated by MUDr. Ondřej Ryska from Hořovice Hospital. He evaluates the symposium as an exceptional meeting of experts in the field of surgery and gastroenterology from all over the country. "We focused mainly on preoperative preparation, prevention of postoperative recurrence and other aspects of treatment of non-specific intestinal inflammation," comments the surgeon from Hořovice.

During both days of the event, the participants had the opportunity to try working with laparoscopic and endoscopic simulator, in the social part of the symposium to see the premises of the Zbiroh castle or to participate in the medieval Olympics, which concluded the meeting of experts.

Appreciation for the whole event belongs not only to the management of Hořovice Hospital, which made this unique symposium possible and financially ensured most of it, but also to the partners of the symposium - the Section of IBD Surgery at the Czech Surgical Society and the Czech Gastroenterological Society, the organizers of both days under the leadership of Zuzana Šerclova, MD, and Ondřej Rysky, MD. Last but not least, thanks to all nearly 150 participants of the congress for their active participation and contribution to the issue.
