Put on your hats

11. 10. 2024

For 10 years, people around the world have been putting hats on their heads on the second Friday in October. But why?

The second Friday in October is the day when we commemorate the need for children's palliative care internationally. This year, the day falls on 11 October 2024.

What does children's palliative care actually involve? What do we mean by it?

"The aim of paediatric palliative care is to improve the quality of life of a child with a serious life-limiting or life-threatening illness, and it is therefore essential to be reminded of its importance on a regular basis. It is comprehensive care for not only the sick child, but also for their carers. It does not matter what stage of the illness the child is in, the aim is to provide both the child and his/her family with maximum support and the highest quality comprehensive services, not only medical, but also social and other services," explains the head of the children's ward and DIOP MUDr. Mahulena Exnerová. "The care of such a sick child is multidisciplinary, so the team includes not only doctors and other health professionals, but also social workers, psychologists, clergy, special educators, and even play specialists," adds the headmistress.

And since the hospital in Horyovice has had two wards for seriously ill children for several years now, where such multidisciplinary care is provided, they could not stay behind this year either and once again put on their #HatsOn4CPC hats in support of it.
