Physiotherapy at Hořovice Hospital, or even in a small ward you can do big things

The Department of Physiotherapy at Hořovice Hospital is a smaller workplace not only in terms of space but also in terms of staffing. Despite this, last year it treated more than six thousand patients, from premature babies to mature seniors. A team of physiotherapists cares for patients in all inpatient wards of the hospital as well as in outpatient settings.

Hořovice Hospital has been providing rehabilitation to its patients for at least three decades. It uses a wide range of physiotherapy methods such as Vojt's reflex therapy, DNS according to Kolář, ACT, McKenzie concept, vestibular rehabilitation, rehabilitation of pelvic floor function disorders, rehabilitation of spastic paresis according to Gracies and others. The rehabilitation also includes physical therapy (electrotherapy - ultrasound, laser, magnetotherapy, shock wave, paraffin, whirlpool baths), as well as reflexive massage and instrumental and manual lymphatic massage.

"Our team consists of two certified rehabilitation doctors, Barbora Št'astná, who deals mainly with adults, and Dušana Bubnová, who specialises in paediatric patients. The leading physiotherapist is Gabriela Němcová, a specialist in paediatric physiotherapy, and our team consists of 17 physiotherapists who provide physiotherapy in the outpatient clinics and all inpatient wards, 2 occupational therapists (both now on maternity leave) and 2 masseurs who also work alternately as physiotherapy assistants in the wards. We must not forget our receptionists, who take care of the optimal ordering of patients, which is not always easy," explains the head doctor Barbora Št'astná.

"We care for patients from newborn age to the elderly with a wide range of different diagnoses. We most often care for patients after injuries or surgeries of the musculoskeletal system, patients with back pain, neurological diagnoses (e.g. multiple sclerosis, stroke, facial nerve palsy), patients with rheumatological problems, premature babies, children with deviations in psychomotor development or congenital developmental defects, and children with scoliosis of the spine. We cooperate with our gynaecologists and urologists colleagues who send us patients with pelvic floor muscle dysfunctions, incontinence, e.g. women after childbirth, gynaecological surgeries or men after urological procedures. Our physiotherapists are systematically educated and deepen their knowledge and skills in various specialized courses, which is why we can offer such a wide range of therapeutic methods. We also regularly train students from the University of West Bohemia who come to us for practice and conduct various workshops for our colleagues from the department," says Gabriela Němcová, the head physiotherapist.

"For us, good workplace relations, mutual cooperation and respect are essential. We are a smaller workplace, in small spaces, but perhaps that is why I think we manage to maintain a pleasant atmosphere and enjoy working closely with each other. We strive for a friendly, individual approach to patients - to tailor therapy to them and to seek together with patients the way to improvement or recovery," adds MUDr. Št'astná in conclusion.
