"Pelvic floor muscle function testing is appropriate for women who have dysfunction of these muscles, often after childbirth or have incontinence problems. It is also an integral part of the therapy for women who have already undergone surgery, most often after the insertion of a tape that fixes the pelvic floor muscles," says Barbora Št'astná, MD, physiotherapist in Horovice.
Physiotherapy begins with an initial examination and filling in a questionnaire and an initial protocol, during which the therapist asks about medical history, lifestyle, sports activities, etc. This is followed by a per vaginam examination to determine the strength of the pelvic floor muscles in three positions. Based on this examination, a suitable exercise aid is recommended. The patient pays for all the equipment herself.
"If the physiotherapist assesses the pelvic floor muscle strength to grade 0 or 1, we start with electrostimulation using the Pericalm device and the Periform electrode. If the patient has a muscle strength of grade 2 or 3 we choose the Educator, which is a probe that activates the pelvic floor muscles. It is also possible to use the Periton device, which increases the activity of the pelvic floor muscles," explains physiotherapist Lucie Matějková.
It is necessary to make an appointment for this therapy in advance, based on the recommendation of the attending physician, i.e. a gynaecologist or urologist.
Since July this year, the physiotherapy department has started a programme of group exercises in a new gym. The group exercises are designed mainly for patients with chronic back pain, for the elderly, for children with poor posture and scoliosis. There will also be group exercises for women after childbirth and for women with pelvic floor disorders.
