Wear hats and drapes to support children's palliative care

9. 10. 2020

Every year, the second Friday in October is declared as a day of support for children's palliative care. This year, the day falls on 9 October 2020, when the global call to "Put on your hats and masks" commemorates the need for children's palliative care and the work of organisations that provide care.

There are approximately 21 million children worldwide with serious life-threatening or life-limiting illnesses who would benefit from paediatric palliative care. Children's palliative care helps these children and their caring families by providing physical, social, emotional and spiritual support to ensure the best possible quality of life.

Help raise awareness of the needs of these sick children and their families just by putting on your hat and drape today. Think about how you can support a specific organization in your area that provides such care.

Today, as part of the Global Challenge Day, raise awareness of children's palliative care in 3 simple steps:

1. Wear a hat and a veil.

2. Take a photo and share it on social media using #HatsOn4CPC.

3. Support a specific pediatric palliative care provider.

In our hospital, we care for children who are sick like this in two wards.

The Children's Department of Long Term and Intensive Care Nursing (DIOP), which opened in September 2018 and is part of the children's ward of our hospital. This ward has a total of 6 fully equipped beds in separate rooms with the possibility of a permanent stay of an accompanying person. Children with serious life-limiting illnesses are hospitalized in the ward. A multidisciplinary team of professionals provides long-term care and support not only to the child, but also to their caregivers.

The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (ICU), where multidisciplinary long-term intensive and resuscitative care is provided to children of all ages who are severely to terminally ill and require ventilator support. The department has 13 separate rooms in a newly built pavilion.
