Multidisciplinary approach to the child with neurodevelopmental disorder

6. 3. 2026

In January, a professional seminar entitled "Multidisciplinary Approach to the Child with Neurodevelopmental Disorder" was held in the conference room of the Hořovice Hospital, which offered a comprehensive view of the care of such a child patient from the perspective of multiple disciplines. The seminar was organised by the Children's Department of Hořovice Hospital and was intended for both medical and non-medical professionals. The meeting, with a rich participation of all professions, provided a unique space for the much needed interdisciplinary dialogue and sharing of experiences across professions.

Multidisciplinary collaboration as a basis for quality care

The aim of the seminar was to present the issue of neurodevelopmental disorders from the perspective of key disciplines involved in the diagnosis, therapy and long-term care of the paediatric patient. Emphasis was placed on the importance of coordinated and structured collaboration within a multidisciplinary team.

The programme opened with a lecture on neurodevelopmental disorders from the perspective of a paediatric neurologist, followed by a child psychiatrist's perspective on this complex issue. The next block focused on psychological diagnosis and care of a child with neurodevelopmental disorder, possibilities of support from a special educator and the meeting was concluded by a clinical speech therapist 's view on working with these patients.

The role of a paediatrician in the care of a child with this disorder and the possibilities of the integrative team of the Hořovice Hospital, which is part of AKESO Holding, were presented by Kateřina Krat'ukova, MD. "The integrative approach responds to the current needs of paediatric practice and the changing structure of the patient spectrum. It focuses in particular on children with chronic or recurrent problems for which standard examinations do not reveal a clear cause, as well as on patients with increasing psychological difficulties. The integrative paediatrics project thus represents a further step towards modern, interdisciplinary care that reflects not only the medical but also the psychosocial needs of the paediatric patient and his or her relatives," explains MUDr. Krat'uková.

A common goal: coherent and long-term care

The programme concluded with a final discussion, which allowed the individual topics to be explored in more depth and opened the floor for specific questions from the practice. The seminar confirmed that caring for a child with a neurodevelopmental disorder requires close collaboration between professionals across medical and non-medical disciplines. The key to success is not only quality diagnosis, but also long-term coordination of care and active communication between team members.

"Comprehensive paediatric care today cannot work in isolation. For children with neurodevelopmental disorders, the interconnection of specialties and regular communication between doctors, psychologists, therapists, social workers, educators and the child's family is essential. Only in this way can we ensure early intervention and the long-term stability of the patient. It is the interconnection of expertise and open dialogue that are the fundamental pillars of quality and modern care not only in the care of this specific group of children," says Mahulena Exnerová, MD, Head of the Department of Supportive and Palliative Care and guarantor of the development of comprehensive paediatric care.

We would like to thank all participants for their active participation, sharing of experience and beneficial professional discussion.
