MUDr. Michal Průša in HOSPITALin: Pain cuts across diagnoses

2. 5. 2025

Pain is a warning signal to the body, not just an unpleasant symptom to get rid of as quickly as possible. Michal Průša, M.D., MBA, a mentor and doctor of the anaesthesiology and resuscitation department of our hospital, spoke about its importance, treatment and the risk of overuse of analgesics for HOSPITAL magazine.

In the interview, he discusses when and why pain arises, what its significance is for diagnosis and treatment, and when it's time to take medication. He explains the difference between acute and chronic pain. It highlights the risks of dependence on analgesics, especially when used without professional supervision.

The doctor stresses that the treatment of chronic pain requires interdisciplinary cooperation. "This stems from the relatively complex diagnosis of the origin of chronic pain and the difficulty in influencing it. In order to be able to effectively therapeutically influence long-term pain, it is usually necessary to influence it with several modalities from different disciplines," says Michal Průša, MD, MBA.

In addition to pharmacological treatment, psychological and social support for the patient is also important - long-term pain affects all areas of life. He also mentions the possibility of alternative methods, such as medical cannabis or acupuncture, which must always be used professionally and in a targeted manner.
