Last week, a new Department of Long-term Intensive and Nursing Care (DIOP) for children from birth to 19 years of age was opened within the Children's Ward of Hořovice Hospital. The ward with six fully equipped beds in separate rooms is designed for children with serious, life-limiting illnesses and their families.

"Until now, the children have been hospitalized in the inpatient part of the Children's Ward. At the moment, we have six fully equipped beds in separate rooms within the new DIOP ward, which offer maximum comfort for children and their parents if they wish to stay together with their child," says the head of the Children's Ward, MUDr. Mahulena Mojžíšová. "This type of care is part of the comprehensive palliative care for chronically ill children with life-limiting illnesses provided by the Hořovice Hospital, with the necessary continuity with outpatient and home care. Care for such children includes not only care for physical health symptoms, but also psychological, social and spiritual care. It is therefore not only the doctor who provides it, but also erudite nurses, psychologists, social workers, clergy - simply a broad team of people caring for the child and his/her entire family. Some children in our hospital have a complex life fate from birth, for example, premature babies, children who have suffered serious diseases of the central nervous system, children with various congenital defects that limit their life expectancy," says the head doctor, who is also the chair of the Section of Children's Palliative Care of the Czech Society of Palliative Medicine.

"In recent days we have received a large number of calls from people who would like to help the children in some way, for example by donating clothes, toys and various aids. We were surprised by the level of participation, for which we are very grateful. The department is fully equipped technically and materially, the children have everything they need for this type of care. However, we very much welcomed, for example, the clothes for premature babies, but also for older children, of which we collected a really large number. We will continue to pass on any surpluses to other departments in the hospital that hospitalise paediatric patients. We are also grateful for all the funds that people have sent to the Žirafka Endowment Fund https://www.nf-zirafka.cz/, which is primarily intended for children's patients at Hořovice Hospital."
