Mr. Director, how would you evaluate 2018?
In terms of the expansion and improvement of services that the hospital achieved last year, I assess 2018 as a very successful year. I am proud of the fact that our hospital is changing for the better and growing more every year, but this year has been even more successful in that regard. Several major tasks were completed and construction has begun on buildings that will make the hospital much more attractive in the future.
In the course of the past year, we managed to complete the foundations of the concept of care for long-term and seriously ill children in our hospital. This is a unique project that includes several different types of care for such affected children. We have been preparing this project for several years. So far we have been running it in good quality, but temporary premises. That is why we were enthusiastic to open a new unique and super-modern pavilion last spring, where the children's intensive care unit (ICU) was moved. This unit is unique in the Czech Republic. With its 13 beds, it provides multidisciplinary chronic intensive and resuscitation care to children of all ages who are very seriously ill. The serious illnesses of our children that we treat here often lead to the failure of vital organs. Most of them are dependent, at least temporarily, on, for example, a breathing machine or other complex apparatus, but this does not prevent them in most cases from playing or having fun in the company of their family or our staff. Such a specialized facility is unique in the Czech Republic and therefore children from a wide range of backgrounds are concentrated here.
After the renovation of the premises in the children's ward, which were originally used for the patients of the NIP, we placed here a new DIOP ward, i.e. a ward for children who require long-term nursing care. This new ward, under the leadership of headmistress Mojžíšová, who is also the author of the whole concept, will also provide the so-called respite care, i.e. a relief service for families who partly care for their seriously ill children at home.
The concept of the project of care for seriously ill children also includes a palliative component, which is a comprehensive care for terminally ill patients. Related to this is the establishment of a palliative team, which we were able to build with the help of a grant from NF Avast. In 2018, we implemented and opened a palliative outpatient clinic that serves not only pediatric patients but also the needs of the entire hospital.
As for the major construction works that took place this year in the hospital premises, it is mainly the construction of a new wing of outpatient clinics, where the oncology department, some specialist outpatient clinics and outpatient clinics of external doctors were relocated. Following the creation of these new outpatient areas, a major reconstruction and relocation of the outpatient clinics in the main hospital building is currently underway in order to make efficient use of the vacated space and to rebuild it to meet the needs of the individual medical specialties.
Completely new outpatient clinics have also been created, such as an additional dental clinic, an osteoporosis and bone disease specialist's office and a bone densitometry examination room. We have expanded the outpatient activities of speech therapy, urology, pneumology and built an additional EMG examination room. Most of the other outpatient clinics will undergo gradual modification.
I am very glad that in cooperation with the town of Hořovice we are also managing to beautify the surroundings of the hospital. After the reconstruction of the roads and their surroundings and the completion of a new external parking lot for patients, the access roads to the hospital have been beautifully reconstructed by the city, including a new public transport stop, planting of greenery and landscaping of the nearby alley. In view of the planned redevelopment of the hospital park, it is clear that the entire hospital complex and surrounding area is growing in beauty.
The main entrance to the hospital complex has also been reconstructed and will now be used exclusively for the entry of emergency vehicles. At the same time, a new security system has been introduced in the main building.
In addition to the existing four operating theatres, a new modern fifth operating theatre was added in July, where gynaecological and urological procedures are mainly performed.
At the end of 2018, AKESO holding a.s. was established, under which Ing. Sotirios Zavalianis united all its medical and non-medical companies, including our hospital.
Mrs. Cervenkova, can you add what changes have been made in terms of staffing?
In terms of securing staff capacity within the hospital, we have started a project and training of qualified nurses from Ukraine. Some of them are already working in the hospital's shift work under the supervision of our nurse trainers.
The Ministry of Health has granted our application for accreditation to conduct practical teaching in accredited medical bachelor's courses for the training of midwives. At the same time, we have managed to obtain authorization to implement the educational program of the accredited qualification course "Sanitarian".
As every year, the hospital representatives participated in awareness raising events within the framework of Health Day, Clean Hands Day, Safety Day, etc., here the hospital's medical staff conducted blood sugar and blood pressure measurements and presented the correct CPR procedures.
What projects are in the pipeline now, Mr. Director?
Earlier this year, construction work will continue on the second floor of the hospital, where the oncology department is now. From 1 March, the new urology department will be opened there.
In the first weeks of the year, we expect the completion of the reconstruction of the radio-diagnostic department, where, in addition to building and layout modifications, all the RDG machines have been replaced and a new CT machine has been purchased. We are proud that all the new equipment is of the highest possible technical standard.
The ever-increasing demands of administrative activities in the healthcare sector and the need to archive most documents for many years has put a strain on the hospital, among other things, to provide storage space for these documents. Therefore, construction has begun and we expect the completion of the central archive, which will serve as the archive for the entire Akeso holding, in the coming weeks.
In March and April, the already regular annual IBD working days and Neonatal Case Days congresses will be held at Zbiroh Castle.
Mrs Červenková, is there anything new in the pipeline for employees?
The biggest ongoing project is the construction of almost a hundred flats behind the hospital, which will be intended for hospital employees. We are also finishing a building for sports-minded employees to park their bicycles and motorbikes, where they will be able to leave them safely during their employment.
Mr. Director, what are the plans for 2019?
As you all must have noticed, intensive construction activity has been going on continuously at the Hořovice Hospital for many years since its privatisation and it is quite obvious that it contributes not only to its beauty but above all to the benefit of all patients. I am aware that the constant activity, despite the consistent pressure on the considerateness of the builders, also has its negative consequences, arising mainly from noise and leading to possible disturbance of the peace necessary for the treatment of patients. I therefore apologise to those who have had any negative experiences during the refurbishment works and hope that, in the interests of improving services, we can work together to overcome these difficulties. I would therefore like to thank all those who have contributed to the fact that we now have the most beautiful hospital in the area.
In the new year 2019, we will be reconstructing the maternity hospital U Sluneční brány, which is the most popular and the largest maternity hospital in the Central Bohemia Region. As the number of births in Hořovice has been around 1,800 for the last few years and the capacity is becoming insufficient, it is necessary to expand and modernise the premises. There will be an increase in the number of delivery rooms, delivery operating theatre and adjacent rooms. The entire maternity ward will be enlarged. For hygiene and safety reasons, the maternity ward will be moved during the reconstruction.
In September, the capacity of the NEMO children's group will be increased. The staff nursery is intended for pre-school children, but during the summer holidays, for example, the children's group also offers several runs of suburban camps for schoolchildren.
The renovation of the transfusion ward is also planned.
We have been developing long-term cooperation with our sister and partner hospital, the Rehabilitation Hospital in Beroun (RNB), with RNB serving as our main partner in rehabilitation and aftercare. At the same time, we also cooperate with each other in terms of staff and health services. The Hořovice hospital serves as a training facility for RNB staff and some Hořovice doctors work in various Beroun specialist outpatient clinics.
As far as long-term plans and future prospects are concerned, our intention is to expand the entire hospital, especially in the area of operating theatres and operating rooms, intensive care beds, examination methods and central reception.
Is there anything else you would like to add in conclusion, Mrs Červenková?
Finally, on behalf of myself, the owner and the director, I would like to thank all the staff for their hard work and dedication and the increased effort caused by the shortage of medical staff across the country in recent years. We are aware that the staffing situation in the health care system in the Czech Republic is becoming more and more difficult, in our hospital we are not much better off than some of the surrounding hospitals, but nevertheless we are also experiencing a decline in professional nursing staff, which we are addressing with, among other things, a project of nurses from Ukraine. The hospital management is trying to improve the conditions of the employees not only with employee benefits, but also by increasing salaries.
