In one of the previous texts on our website you have learned something about prevention, and a substantial part of the article was devoted to cancer prevention. And in the context of cancer prevention, we must not forget about melanoma of the skin, because the number of new cases of melanoma is increasing every year and has even increased sixfold in the last 40 years.
Melanoma is a malignant tumour that arises from the pigment cells of the melanocytes and is mainly caused by UVB radiation. It initially appears as a spot on the skin or changes to an existing mole. Your attention should be drawn to the change in colour, size, irregular edges or elevation above skin level. If you notice any of these symptoms, it is important not to delay and to seek medical attention in time to avoid the possible development of metastases.
When it comes to melanoma, prevention should not be underestimated. The first point is self-examination of the moles, the warning signs of which we have already described above. Another, equally important point is protection from UV radiation. It has been clearly shown that the risk of developing melanoma is several times higher in people who have been sunburnt in the past. Therefore, choose the right clothes for sun exposure, the right SPF cream and try to avoid the sun between 11am and 3pm. When in doubt, but even just as a precaution, see a dermatologist. He or she is the most reliable diagnostician for diagnosing any findings, also thanks to the help of a special optical device called a dermatoscope.
