The doctor assured that initiation of resuscitation is crucial to the patient's survival and that the risk of harm to the child when performed correctly is very low. "No matter what you do, you can never make a mistake because when you initiate resuscitation, that is absolutely the most important and most significant factor in the survival of the patient," said Jana Djakow, MD.
Proper resuscitation should begin with breathing and chest compressions. With compressions, it is important to perform them to an appropriate depth. People are most often afraid to compress sufficiently in infants, where two inches is used to do so. "Usually, you don't have to worry at all that you can harm the baby in any way, because the baby has no other chance at that point," emphasizes M.D. Djakow.
