How to properly remove a tick

Now in the summer, questions about the removal of attached ticks in medical clinics are more than frequent. Therefore, here is an overview of a few principles to follow when removing ticks.

  1. Carefully examine your WHOLE body, ideally every day, for example before showering. You can also ask a family member to help you, or use a mirror in hard-to-see areas. Don't forget the hair on your head or behind your ears.

  2. If you do find a tick, then prepare disinfectant, gloves and tweezers. In addition to tweezers, you can also use ticks or a special card designed to remove ticks. Do not delay removing the tick, as the risk of infection increases with the time it takes to attach.

  3. Now for the actual removal - put on gloves, disinfect the area and use the tweezers to wiggle the tick from side to side, which takes some time. Then disinfect the site again. If you can't remove the whole tick, you can ask a doctor for help.

  4. Once you have removed the tick, dispose of it safely, still wearing gloves to protect you from transmitting the infection. For example, you can flush it down the toilet or burn it, but do not squeeze it between your fingers.

  5. After the tick has been removed, it is advisable to monitor your skin for several weeks. If you observe a patch of around 8-10cm in size, possibly with a central discharge, then it is a good idea to contact a doctor, but certainly do not panic at the slight redness at the site of attachment, this is a perfectly normal finding.
