Hořovice hospital wore purple to support premature babies

17. 11. 2025

As in previous years, the Hořovice Hospital was symbolically wrapped in purple this year. In this way, it joins the global initiative and expresses support for families whose children were born prematurely.

Every year on 17 November we commemorate World Prematurity Day. This day honours children who were born earlier than they should have been, their parents and the health professionals who help them cope with their difficult beginnings.

The tradition was initiated in 2008 by the European Foundation for the Care of Newborn Infants (EFCNI) and the colour purple has become its symbol. It represents hope, strength and empathy. Therefore, hospitals, monuments and public buildings around the world are lit up with purple light the day before, on 16 November, in support of the littlest fighters.

Caring for the little ones

Since 2011, the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) for newborns has been operating within the Neonatal Department of Hořovice Hospital . Here, a team of experienced doctors and nurses provides top-quality care to babies born from the 31st week of pregnancy onwards, as well as to premature newborns who need intensive support after birth. The modern technical equipment here is complemented by the individual and sensitive approach of the entire staff.

"Every baby and every parent goes through a different story. Our job is not only to help them medically, but also to be supportive and allow them to be together as much as possible. The contact between the parent and the child is irreplaceable, as it supports not only the child's development, but also the mutual bond," says the head of the Neonatal Department , Milena Dokoupilová, MD.

November as a month of hope

World Prematurity Day is a reminder of the importance of quality care, cooperation and support that these children and their families need. It is also a thank you to all those who are involved in their treatment and development, which are parents and health care professionals who, through their daily work, help to give children a chance for a healthy start in life.
