"Thanks to the hospital's facilities, we can offer patients many examinations in one place," says MUDr. Petr Šafránek.

Since last November, MUDr. Petr Šafránek, a young but very helpful pulmonologist with numerous experiences in the field of pneumology, has been working in the internal medicine department of the hospital. The arrival of the new doctor has enabled, among other things, a significant expansion of the office hours of the pulmonary outpatient clinic. You can find out more in the following interview.

Doctor, could you briefly introduce yourself to our patients and your colleagues? Where have you worked so far?

After graduating from medical school, I joined the pulmonary department of the hospital in Klatovy, where I worked for five years. During my preparation for certification I completed internships at other specialist departments including the pulmonary clinic of the Pilsen University Hospital.

What are your first impressions of the hospital in Horovice?

I like the hospital very much. The co-workers I have met so far are very helpful and kind. And I must not forget the modern equipment in the outpatient clinic, which I am of course very satisfied with.

What plans are you coming to Hořovice with, how will your practice work and what will you offer to your patients?

Diseases of the respiratory system are often strongly subjective and limit patients significantly. I am glad that thanks to the equipment of the office I can offer clients many examinations in one place - spirometry (functional examination of the lungs), pulmonary diffusion examination, bronchoscopic examination (used to explore the airways). A great help, especially for asthmatics, is a device aimed at measuring nitric oxide. Many patients will also appreciate the fact that on Mondays and Thursdays the office hours are until 6 pm.

How do you see the situation in the field of pneumology?

The field of pneumology is based on the care of patients with tuberculosis, although this is no longer its predominant focus. Today, other lung diseases are at the forefront, such as bronchial asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and bronchogenic carcinoma (lung cancer). Despite effective antibiotics, pneumonia remains a serious problem. Lung disease is often linked to smoking, so educating and helping people to quit this addiction is also the job of the pulmonologist.
