Snoring does not have to be just an unpleasant sound phenomenon that annoys our fellow travellers and is essentially a social problem. It is said that up to 25% of men and 10% of women snore, which is not an insignificant number, and this is why more attention is being paid to snoring nowadays than ever before.Snoring can also be caused by much more serious health problems, especially sleep apnoea syndrome. This has several forms, the most common being the so-called obstructive form. In this form, although breathing effort is preserved during sleep, there is a collapse and obstruction of the airways, resulting in disturbed sleep architecture and numerous micro-awakenings that we do not even notice. We then feel tired in the morning or fall asleep during the day, we have headaches, we feel depressed. Other symptoms include reduced work performance, dry mouth, high blood pressure, heart rhythm disturbances and cardiovascular problems including myocardial infarction.Treatment of this syndrome is possible, but a correct diagnosis is needed. Although suspicion can be expressed on the basis of anamnestic data, polysomnography remains the gold standard. Several parameters are monitored during sleep, in particular the volume of air inhaled and exhaled, the oxygen saturation of the blood and the patient's breathing movements. For several months now, the diagnosis of sleep apnoea syndrome can be carried out in our hospital, so if you observe any of the above symptoms, make an appointment for a consultation with the head nurse of the Internal Medicine Department, J. Pichlík, tel. 311 542 441 or e-mail pichlik@nemocnice-horovice.cz.
