You are a clinical pharmacist at the newly established Department of Clinical Pharmacy at the Hořovice Hospital. Could you briefly introduce yourself?
My name is Zdeněk Novák and I come from Hlinsko in Bohemia. During my studies at grammar school I was mostly interested in chemistry, mathematics and biology. This determined my future direction. I graduated from the Faculty of Pharmacy at Charles University in Hradec Kralove. First, I spent a few years on a PhD course and then the opportunity arose to do an internship at the Department of Clinical Pharmacy at the Hospital Na Bulovce, which I immediately took advantage of.
What is clinical pharmacy, when was it created and for what purpose?
The development of clinical pharmacy in the Czech Republic began in the last century, and in 2010 resulted in the establishment of the first clinical pharmacy departments at the Na Bulovka Hospital and the Na Homolka Hospital. Currently, there are approximately 30 such departments in the Czech Republic and their purpose is the safe and effective administration of medicines both in inpatient wards and outpatient clinics.
How should we imagine this activity?
In a hospital, it involves checking the medicines that a patient is taking chronically, both on admission to hospital and then during his or her hospitalisation. In particular, we focus on drug interactions, adverse drug reactions, dose adjustments for reduced renal function, liver function and so on.
What are your impressions from Hořovice?
I haven't had a chance to see the town of Hořovice yet, but I was attracted by the surrounding landscape that I observe on my way to work. The hospital impressed me with its modern touch and leaves me with the impression of a pleasant, almost family-like environment.
