"We are continuing successfully," says MUDr. Michal Průša, Director of Hořovice Hospital

1. 1. 2020

Michal Průša, the director of the hospital, Blanka Červenková, the deputy for nursing care, and Jiří Pichlík, the head nurse of the Hořovice Hospital, told us what the year 2019 was like and what awaits us in the new year 2020.

MUDr. Michal Průša, MBA:

What was the biggest success of the hospital in 2019?

I consider the biggest success of the last year to be the fact that the hospital has continued its activities and continued to grow. The hospital has already exceeded its regional scope in a number of fields. This year, we were able to open a new urology department, fulfilling our plan to expand surgical specialties. At the same time, we have managed to spectacularly renovate the maternity ward, which we inaugurated in November, and I believe that mothers-to-be will enjoy the luxury of the new premises combined with the familiar friendliness and professional erudition of the staff.

In addition, the project of the filing room was completed, for which a new building was built and where the medical records of the entire Akeso holding will be stored.

With these renovations, the major construction work inside the hospital building has been completed and we are pleased that patients will no longer be disturbed by major construction traffic. Of course, there will continue to be continuous renovations and repairs of the older premises as and when necessary to keep the hospital looking "like new". In terms of major renovations outside the main building, we will be renovating the building that houses the blood transfusion station in 2020.

Outside of construction, the hospital's main focus continues to be on improving the quality of our services, with a focus on meeting the spiritual and social needs of patients, for example. A new hospital chaplain has joined us to take care of the spiritual needs of patients and staff. We have recruited an additional health and social worker who is in charge of the social area. We are also trying to expand the range of outpatient care.

Hořovice Hospital continues to profile itself as an acute care hospital with an extensive complement of outpatient services. We continue to deepen our cooperation with our sister hospital, the Rehabilitation Hospital Beroun, which provides acute medical services and, on the other hand, we are increasingly making use of rehabilitation and treatment options for long-term patients at the Beroun hospital.

Are there any projects that have an overlap into 2020?

We are currently completing the construction of apartments for the hospital's employees, where 6 houses with 87 apartments will be built. We are also finishing the landscaping of the hospital grounds, including a park that will be located above the outpatient clinic area and will be used by patients to make their time in the hospital more pleasant. Hořovice Hospital is also expanding its services to the surrounding area, for example, this year we will start operating a children's outpatient clinic in Žebrák.

Are there plans to expand in the area of instrumentation in 2020?

Instrumentation is continuously renewed and is at the best possible level. Due to the rapid development of the healthcare sector, medical devices become obsolete quite quickly and usually need to be replaced after a few years. Thanks to the owner's vision of a state-of-the-art hospital, we are successfully doing this. For example, a major renewal of operating tables and intensive care beds will take place at the beginning of the year. Already in 2019, we have managed to renew the equipment in the radiology department, which will now be officially presented in January.

In terms of longer-term plans, we are preparing for a complete expansion of the hospital. The current premises are gradually becoming insufficient due to the growing interest of patients in our hospital. The capacity of the hospital is virtually exhausted and if we want to continue to provide quality services to all patients, we will have to make a major investment in a hospital extension. Until we can increase capacity, we want to focus our efforts on improving the quality of existing care. Among other things, we will have to defend our accreditation in 2020.

Blanka Červenková:

What was the staffing situation in 2019?

It is a success that the new facilities have been able to be saturated even in the face of staffing problems across the country. Nurse turnover is at a low level in our hospital. We have also been successful with the so-called administrative positions, to which we have redirected some of the administrative tasks that are necessary in the operation of the wards and do not need to be performed by nurses. We have also, for example, increased the number of physiotherapists on wards across the hospital. However, there are still not enough qualified nurses. For those interested in working as an orderly in the hospital, we have an orderly course, after which it happens that the orderly continues his or her further studies and completes his or her general nurse training with our financial support.

Mgr. Jiří Pichlík:

What activities were implemented for employees in 2019?

We managed to expand the NEMO children's group from 24 places to 48. Employees praise the possibility of placing a child in the children's group, if only because children from 1 year of age are accepted and the opening hours are adapted to the working hours of the medical staff. For example, a bicycle room has been opened, a building for the placement of bicycles, which also houses charging facilities for electric bicycles.

Have the benefits for employees been expanded?

We are constantly trying to expand the range of benefits for employees. In 2019, for example, we purchased season tickets to the Prague Zoo and the water park in Beroun. We have introduced English language classes, which 80 employees have signed up for. We have implemented several joint events, such as a trip to Brno to see the Titanic exhibition or to the Christmas market in Dresden, where we had to send three buses due to high interest. Among the benefits, the free legal advice and the shuttle service from Prague and Pilsen remain very popular. At the end of the year, there is an annual Christmas party where a banquet is prepared for employees, a well-known band performs and vouchers for a trip to Greece for 2 people are given to the best employees. This year 35 were given out.

The demands and requirements of patients are increasing and with that the demands of working in healthcare are also increasing. We thank all the staff for their dedicated work.
