Head of the neonatology department Milena Dokoupilová, head nurse Kamila Přádová and neonatology nurse Anna Tušková, all from Hořovice Hospital, can receive a significant award for their dedicated and lifelong work. They have been nominated for this year's Purple Heart Award. It is awarded to healthcare professionals who have made a significant contribution to the care of premature or sick children.

"I am very pleased with the nomination. It is positive feedback from the parents of children I was close to during their difficult beginnings. I try to take care not only of the children but also of the psychological state of the parents, because it is very important to be a support for the whole family. Together, everything is better managed," said Milena Dokoupilová, the head of the hospital.

She has been taking care of newborn babies for three decades. And as she admits, even after all these years, she is touched by the beginning of human life. She started out at Prague's U Apolináře Hospital, where she spent eighteen long years. When she was offered the chance to build a new, larger maternity hospital at the Hořovice Hospital, she had to think about it for a while.

"But because I like life's challenges, I thought I'd give it a try. And I have to say that I have never regretted it since then," Dokoupilová said.

The Hořovice maternity hospital now has the status of a perinatology centre, which means that premature babies can be cared for there. The smallest baby born there weighed 980 grams. Premature babies not only need special care, but they are also at risk of a number of health problems. According to Milena Dokoupilová, communication with parents is therefore extremely important.

"It is good for parents to know what they are getting into. They need to know that they will not be able to have the child with them. Moreover, they are usually very afraid of him. That's why it's essential that the mother starts looking after him as soon as possible. Communication with parents accounts for 50 to 70 per cent of the work of the neonatal unit," explained the head. And she tries to involve dads in the care of babies.

"If they don't dare to do it themselves, they get it on the third day befelem. It's all about overcoming fear," Dokoupilova smiled. The Hořovice hospital received the most nominations in this poll. And what does the headmistress explain this with? "The environment and the state-of-the-art equipment of our department allow us to provide high-level care, which we try to complement with sufficient empathy and endless patience," Dokoupilová explained.

Head nurse Kamila Prádová has been working in neonatology for 27 years. She first worked in Prague, but has been working in Hořovice for 12 years. She was at the birth of the neonatal intensive care unit at the Hořovice Hospital. "I appreciate the nomination for the Purple Heart Award and thank everyone who voted. There is no greater award for me than the satisfaction of the parents of our smallest patients," said Přádová.

"The nomination means a lot to me. I see it as a reward for the work I do with my heart and I really love it. In our department, we meet with parents sometimes in really difficult times. There are also families who spend several weeks, sometimes months, with us, and that sticks in each other's minds. I think my nomination was mainly because of the empathetic and kind approach and the effort to be supportive to parents in every situation. Thanks to this, we can experience nice moments together here, which we all remember fondly," said neonatology nurse Anna Tušková. She is convinced that the Hořovice Hospital won three awards precisely because of its professional, but still human approach. "I see the nomination as a success for the entire neonatology department of Hořovice Hospital, because we are one team here and we would not have such great results without each other," concluded Tušková.
