Protecting lives with clean hands

6. 5. 2016

The date of 5 May is the annual symbol of "Hand Hygiene Day" organized under the auspices of the World Health Organization. On this international day, our hospital also joined this campaign and allowed both patients and employees of the hospital in Hořovice to practice good practice.

"Clean Hands Action", as we called the campaign in the Hořovice hospital, took place in the entrance area of the hospital. During the morning, students from the Secondary Medical School in Beroun handed out educational leaflets to visitors of the hospital and offered the possibility of checking hand hygiene under UV light. With the help of ultraviolet light from a special lamp, everyone could check whether they had used the disinfectant solution correctly, in sufficient quantity and on the whole hand. More than 120 visitors to the hospital took part in this event.

"In general, most infections are transmitted on the hands, even in healthcare facilities, where everyone should be able to follow the correct procedures. It is important to know the situations in which to use disinfectant. Equally important is the correct procedure for applying sufficient disinfectant to all areas of the hands. We must not forget the fingertips and thumbs. This time, too, the campaign has shown that these are the places we most often miss when disinfecting our hands", says Mgr. Blanka Hošková, Quality Manager at Hořovice Hospital.

At lunchtime, hospital employees also had this opportunity before entering the hospital canteen and more than 350 employees checked their hands under ultraviolet light, thus supporting the campaign. "I would like to thank all the employees for their warm attitude, which was beyond expectations, and also all those who participated in the organisation of this event," adds the Hořovice manager.
