We support breastfeeding! We have our own lactation team

Promoting and supporting breastfeeding is an integral part of care in neonatal units. The more breastfed babies there are, the greater the positive impact it will have on the overall health of society, the economy and the ecology.

Breastfeeding is the most ideal nutritional option for a newborn, but on the other hand, it is important to remember that there are circumstances that may pose obstacles to this. It is always important that both mother and baby are in the best possible mental state after birth. Most mothers around the world are determined and hopeful to breastfeed their babies because they realise that breastfeeding can contribute to healthy development and allows the closest contact between mother and baby. Breast milk nutrition is the most natural and inexpensive way to nourish any baby. Breast milk is a source of ingredients necessary for the healthy growth and development of the baby. It contains everything in a balanced ratio.

In our department, we try to promote breastfeeding as much as possible and look for other ways to develop it. After a spontaneous birth, bonding and early attachment to the breast in the delivery room is already a matter of course when the newborn is in good health. Babies born by caesarean section are in a large percentage attached to the breast within 1 hour of birth. Subsequently, all babies are roomed in as soon as possible, in the care of their mothers, which is one of the best foundations for lactation development.

In an effort to further improve breastfeeding support, last year we already recruited 3 lactation consultants to the neonatal unit over and above the nursing care, who came to the unit to assist on an irregular basis. As this support has proved successful, we have decided to create a new ' Lactation Team' which works closely with the nursing staff on the ward. This team is headed by a lactation consultant, Ms Lucie Daňková, who has been working full-time for us since 15 January 2020. The team also includes Věra Jonczy and Aneta Nováková, who come irregularly.

At the same time, we have opened a lactation clinic, which is intended for mothers who experience any problems after discharge. Mothers can make an appointment at 702 295 055, office hours are every Tuesday from 1 to 3 pm. We plan to create more educational materials for mothers and ward staff, and at the same time train them.
