Thanks to the selfless support that Mirka's fundraiser has shown to the hospital, Saturday was a day of joy for the children and the hospital staff with a nice visit and unwrapping of gifts.
"Children do not have many opportunities to meet people other than family and ward staff, so they welcome every visit and are happy for it," mentions the head doctor of the DIOP department, Katerina Machkova, MD. The gifts that Mirka's collection brought to our little patients were carefully selected by the attending physicians and other DIOP staff. "Due to the severity of their diagnoses, the children hospitalized in our ward cannot play with ordinary toys that we know from our homes or educational institutions. Special toys are designed for such sick children or, if you prefer, children with disabilities, which help to develop, for example, their motor skills, tactile or visual sensations, but also other senses such as hearing or smell. Among the gifts there was a set for aromatherapy, special musical instruments or special plush stroking gloves," adds MUDr. Mahulena Exnerová, head of the children's ward.
"We really appreciate any help and gratefully accept it for our patients. There are activities and aids that help our patients and improve the quality of their care, but they are not part of the care covered by insurance companies. In these cases, it is always necessary to find funds for such activities in another way," adds MUDr. Machková.
In addition to gifts to support motor skills and help with teaching, Mirka's collection also brought a St. Nicholas gift and Christmas presents intended for children who will be in the hospital at that time. "Ideally, children should be at home with their loved ones in the run-up to St Nicholas' Day and especially at Christmas, enjoying the holidays, which are surely the most wonderful time of the year for them. Unfortunately, some children are not so lucky and, despite their best efforts, have to spend these days in hospital. Getting presents for them and bringing them joy is the least we can do," says Lucie Knappeová, the organiser of Mirka's collection.
