You will encounter their care in many places in our hospital. In the outpatient clinics they help with prevention and family planning, in the gynaecology department they support women in dealing with health problems, and in the antenatal department they help mothers cope with the first days with their baby, breastfeeding and their new role in life.
Midwives care for women with expertise, empathy and respect - in joyful moments and in times of uncertainty. Today, on 5 May, International Day of Midwives, they deserve a big thank you for their daily work, support and commitment.
At the Hořovice Maternity Hospital , midwives assist with the birth of hundreds of babies every year. But their role is far from over in the delivery room. They accompany women through pregnancy, stand by them during childbirth and help them even after they are discharged from the maternity ward.
"Childbirth is a unique moment that a woman remembers all her life. It is all the more important that she feels safe, respected and in good hands," says the manager of the Hořovice Maternity Hospital and chief physician of the Neonatal Department, MUDr. Milena Dokoupilová. According to her, the strength of midwives lies not only in their expertise, but also in their empathy, experience and ability to respond sensitively to the needs of each mother.
The Hořovice Maternity Hospital, awarded as the best maternity hospital in the Central Bohemian Region for 2025, combines modern facilities and state-of-the-art equipment with respect for the natural course of childbirth.
A family approach and respect for every story
Every birth is different, just as every woman comes with her own story, expectations and fears. It is the ability to perceive these differences and adapt care to them that is one of the key skills of midwives.
"We want every woman who comes to us to feel that she is not alone in this. Our goal is to create a place where she feels safe, comfortable and truly heard. We know that warm arms and mutual trust are as important for a woman in sensitive moments as the professional care itself," says midwife Mgr. Jitka Žaludová.
"What I really appreciate about our midwives is their attitude and their constant efforts to develop themselves. They regularly broaden their professional and practical skills, and they also devote themselves to supportive techniques that help women to experience this moment with greater calm and confidence," adds Deputy Chief Physician for Obstetrics MUDr. Dita Pelikánová.
Wider support for expectant parents
The Hořovice Maternity Hospital also offers expectant parents antenatal courses to help them prepare for the arrival of the baby and the first weeks of parenthood. During the courses, they will receive practical information about childbirth, newborn care and important skills, such as basic first aid.
The offer also includes the Individual Care for Parents programme, thanks to which women can be in contact with their chosen midwife already during pregnancy.
"The antenatal classes and the individual care option allow us to get to know the mothers before they arrive at the hospital. This makes them feel more confident," adds Petra Stará, DiS, the station's labour room nurse.
On the occasion of the International Day of Midwives, we would like to sincerely thank all our midwives for their daily work, professionalism, humanity and commitment.
