Handling the patient as a heavy burden

This was the name of the training organized for the employees of the Hořovice Hospital by physiotherapists Pavlína Jiráková, Dana Bělohlávková and Petra Slabochová.

Although the name may seem ridiculous to some, we are not far from the truth. At any given moment, a patient who is physically indisposed or even completely immobile becomes a very difficult object for the caregiver to deal with. "In most cases the nurses are young, slender ladies who weigh noticeably less than the patient himself. It is necessary to teach them how to use the strength and leverage of their own bodies to make the manipulation easier or to manage it at all," explains physiotherapist Pavlína Jiráková.

Many times, even a burly orderly has a problem when handling a patient, let alone a frail nurse. Physiotherapists are well aware of this problem, as well as the fact that it is the medical staff who must first and foremost protect their health by safe handling. If they get injured and are incapacitated, there will be no one to take care of the patients.

Proper handling of the indisposed patient is thus better and safer not only for the medical staff but also for the patients themselves. And that was the aim of the training. The physiotherapists first explained everything and demonstrated it on a volunteer. Then they gave space for all participants to try out the correct manipulation and positioning. In the process, they corrected them and gave advice on how to improve their technique.

All participants agreed that the training was of great benefit to their practice and were happy that their colleagues were thinking about their health and the safety of their patients.
